Follow these steps to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/proxy\/go.php?url=http:\/\/infotrac.galegroup.com\/itweb\/uiuc_uc?db=AU\">Gale Directory Library<\/a> to find an organization.<\/p>\n<h3>To view an encyclopedia or directory<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Click on an encyclopedia or directory that is most relevant to your research (Example: &#8220;Encyclopedia of Associations: International Organizations&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>Select the most recent edition (Example: &#8220;Encyclopedia of Associations: International Organizations, 2020 ed.&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>To search for organizations<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Search name, location, or keyword in the search box, or filter your results by categories such as state, country, or subject category. Examples of subject categories are &#8220;conservation&#8221; or &#8220;child welfare&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>From the list that appears, click on the name of an association or organization<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The information that appears includes location, when it was founded, a brief description, and more<\/li>\n<li>Click on the URL to connect to the association&#8217;s website<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Find Organizations Using Charity Navigator <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charitynavigator.org\/\">Charity Navigator<\/a><\/em><\/strong><em> is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that evaluates charities based on a variety of factors, including fiscal stewardship and accountability and transparency. While its main purpose is the evaluation of charities, it is an excellent tool for locating a charity or organization working to address a particular need.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>To find a charity or organization:<\/h3>\n<h4>By Basic Search<\/h4>\n<p>On the upper left hand side of the website, enter keywords relevant to your topic into the box and click search (Example: &#8220;Animal Rescue&#8221;).<\/p>\n<h4>By A-Z Star-Rated Directory<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On the homepage, click A-Z Star-Rated Directory to browse rated charities.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Evaluate an Organization<\/strong><em>:<\/em><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Look for information about <strong>what the organization does <\/strong>and <strong>who they are<\/strong>.\u00a0This information may be found on web pages with titles such as:\u00a0&#8220;About&#8221;, &#8220;About Us&#8221;, &#8220;Who We Are&#8221;, &#8220;Our Staff&#8221;, &#8220;Purpose&#8221;, &#8220;Mission&#8221;, &#8220;Learn More&#8221;, &#8220;Contact Us&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>For published information by or about the organization,\u00a0look for pages titled: &#8220;News&#8221;, &#8220;Reports&#8221;, or &#8220;Publications&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><em>What is the organization doing about the problem?\u00a0What are their proposed solutions?\u00a0<\/em>Look for <strong>ACTION words<\/strong>:\u200b\u200b\u200b&#8221;strategies&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;solutions&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;initiatives&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;programs&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;current projects&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;campaigns&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;events&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;what we do&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;where we work&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;get involved&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;volunteer&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;take action&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;plans&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watch out for:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0 Money:\u00a0<\/strong>Avoid organizations that focus on asking for money or donations, rather than providing information about what they actually do or how to help.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 <strong>Contact Information:\u00a0<\/strong>no contact information is provided OR provided contact information is suspicious (such as a\u00a0personal\u00a0email address rather than\u00a0an email address for the organization)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 <strong>Current Information:\u00a0<\/strong>Is the website maintained and updated?\u00a0Does the organization have any current projects?
