New Voyager Online Catalog

Voyager 7 includes a new look for the online catalog,  It’s often referred to as the “tomcat” catalog.   Tomcat is not the name of the new catalog.   It’s the name of part of the underlying software that supports the web interface in version 7.

When Voyager 7 first comes up, system response in the new tomcat catalog will be slower than it generally has been in the traditional Voyager catalog.  Once version 7 is live, CARLI staff will focus their attention on monitoring system response and making adjustments to improve the response time.

Apart from having the UIUC banner, our new online catalog page will be pretty much “out-of-the box” as it was received from the vendor.  After system response has been restored to “normal”, CARLI staff will work with I-Share member libraries on further customizing the individual libraries’ online catalog pages to reflect local cosmetic changes (e.g., colors, etc.) that had been made in the traditional catalog.

Some features that CARLI developed in-house for the current version of the online catalog will not appear in the new catalog right away, but they should be back in place before the summer is over.   This includes:

  • Repeat search in the I-Share catalog?
  • Find other copies in I-Share libraries
  • Text me this call number
  • SFX (Discover) links in online catalog records
  • the workaround that assists our users who try to request our items for pickup at one of our UIUC libraries in the Universal Catalog (aka the AAA problem in UB)–the workaround refers users back to our local to place these requests
  • Save Search Strategy

We will update the Known Problems with the OPAC page as information becomes available.

Some new features that will be present in the new online catalog from day 1 include:

  • greatly enhanced accessibility
  • the back button works
  • pages are bookmarkable
  • MyAccount messages are improved
  • screens are cleaner and easier to read
  • new timeout popup display (length of timeout doesn’t change)

Links to Voyager Online Catalog from Library web pages & from LibGuides

  • The link structure for Voyager 7 is changing for all links to specific catalog pages and for “canned” searches.
  • If you have links from a web page or from LibGuides into the catalog that link to specific catalog pages, these links will need to be updated after the upgrade is complete.
  • If you have “canned” WebVoyage searches, these links will also need to be updated after the upgrade is complete.
  • Information on updating web links is available here.
  • To check on links in LibGuides, login to LibGuides, go to the Admin page and click on “Link Checker.”  Contact Merinda Hensley if you have questions.
