Library faculty and staff are regularly approached to teach credit-bearing courses for programs, departments and colleges outside the University Library. Upon receiving an offer to teach a credit-bearing course, the Library faculty or staff member must:
- obtain approval from one’s unit head;
- obtain approval from the University Librarian.
Written approval for the teaching assignment must be obtained from the unit head and the University Librarian prior to accepting the teaching appointment offered.
In addition, the faculty or staff member should determine if the unit offering the course will make compensation directly to the individual, directly to the University Library, or if this is a choice that can be made at the instructor’s discretion.
If compensation is to be paid directly to the individual, the teaching assignment will be treated as an overload , and no work associated with the teaching assignment may be conducted during the normal Library work day. Library faculty and staff who must conduct work associated with the teaching assignment during the normal Library work day in an overload arrangement should be prepared to take vacation time, as appropriate. Planning for the use of such time should be made in advance with one’s supervisor or unit head. If compensation is to be paid to the University Library, the teaching assignment will be treated as part of the Library assignment, and work associated with the teaching assignment may be conducted during the Library work day (with the approval of the supervisor or unit head).
If compensation is to be paid to the University Library, the Library will establish a separate account for each individual faculty or staff member receiving payment and will make these funds available to the individual for approved expenses, including (but not limited to):
- hourly Student Assistants
- hourly Graduate Assistants
- hourly staff (Extra Help)
- professional development expenses
- research expenses
At the time of appointment, the Library faculty or staff member will be responsible for notifying in writing the University Librarian and the Chair/Director/Dean of the academic unit offering the course of the preferred method of payment. Any monies paid directly to the University Library that remain unspent at the end of the fiscal year in which they were received will revert to the use of the University Librarian, unless prior arrangements are made with the University Librarian and the Director of the Library Business Office.
Guidelines for GSLIS Payments to Library Faculty and Staff
The Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) regularly offers teaching assignments to Library faculty and staff, both on an adjunct basis and on the basis of affiliate appointments. In order to best meet the needs of both the University Library and GSLIS, Library faculty and staff who are offered teaching assignments will be given the choice of having compensation directed either to the individual or to the Library (see above). This arrangement is the result of discussions between GSLIS and the University Library and reflect the unique relationship between these academic units. Arrangements made between Library faculty and staff and other units will be governed by the resources available to those units.
Please note that GSLIS allow individuals to designate either direct payment of compensation to the individual, or payment of compensation to the University Library. Library faculty or staff offered a teaching appointment with GSLIS must follow the guidelines enumerated above for seeking approval prior to accepting the appointment, establishing payment particulars, and making use of Library time and resources in support of the teaching assignment.
Guidelines for Library Faculty with Joint Appointments
In cases in which a Library faculty member has a joint appointment with an academic unit, responsibilities for regular classroom instruction may be part of the primary responsibilities of the position. In such cases, there may be no additional compensation for teaching assigned credit courses, but the individual faculty member must still communicate with the relevant unit head and with the University Librarian, regarding time and resources to be dedicated to the course.
