Email Migration Help

After your email has migrated to Exchange Online, check that Outlook is working properly.

  1. If you’re prompted to sign in, enter your Illinois email address as the username instead of just your netid. Continue to use your netid password to log in, and check “Stay connected” to avoid being asked for your password each time you open Outlook.
  2. Restart Outlook if you notice any issues. You may have to add back any shared mailboxes you had previously added to Outlook.
  3. If issues continue to persist, contact the Library IT Help Desk via TDX or call 217-244-4688. You should still be able to access your email and calendar online at outlook.office365.com.

Below is more information on checking email online, adding shared mailboxes, and updating email settings on Macs, phones, and tablets. Also check out Technology Services’ email migration FAQ and the migration process for more information.

Checking email online

Go to https://outlook.office365.com and log in with your Illinois email address and netid password. If you go to webmail.illinois.edu, you will be redirected to outlook.office365.com.

Why do I only see some emails?

By default, Outlook separates emails into two tabs– Focused and Other. The focused tab includes emails that Outlook determines to be most important, while Other includes the rest of your emails. This feature can be turned off in the settings.

Shared mailboxes

Instructions to add a shared mailbox to Outlook or Outlook online will change slightly:

  • Log in with your email account as the username and not just your netid.
  • The interface for online email will be a little different.

Mac users

Follow these instructions to update email settings in Outlook 2016 for Macs, Mail.app and Calendar.app, and Thunderbird: Email settings on Macs.

Update email and calendar on your phone or tablet

If you use Microsoft’s free Outlook app, you may not need to update anything. But if any issues syncing to your email occur, the easiest way to fix it is to update email or calendar apps by removing the account from the mobile device and add it back. If available, add your Exchange account via the Active Sync setting in the app or you can download and install the free Microsoft Outlook app. Check out Microsoft’s documentation on setting up Exchange 365 on common phone apps.

If you are prompted to add additional settings, use these settings:

  • Email address: [yournetid]@illinois.edu
  • User Name: [yournetid]@illinois.edu
  • Domain: UOFI
  • Password: [enter email password]
  • Server: outlook.office365.com

Android

Email and calendar setting can found under Settings -> Accounts -> Add account-> Microsoft Exchange or Active Sync.

FYI: Some Android clients warn you of all the possible ActiveSync policy features that are available when setting up an ActiveSync account. Campus does not enable any of these features other than allowing you to remotely wipe your own device through Outlook Web Access (OWA). For more information about Remote Wipe and Admin Access, please see more information on Technology Services’ knowledgebase: Email, Exchange, Mobile Device Remote Wipe and Admin Access.

iPhone/iPad:

Email and calendar settings can be found under Settings->Accounts & Passwords-> Add Account-> Exchange.
