Hours Working Group

Results of the Discussions of the Hours WG

Rev. July 20, 2010

Background

Administrative Council asked the Associate University Librarian for Services to consult with a representative group of Library faculty regarding approaches to a new approach to setting service hours for Library units that had the potential to move us toward a more “standard” set of hours across the Library and to promise a more sustainable approach given recent reductions to permanent, contract, and hourly human resources in the Library.

Membership

Following two calls for volunteers at or after meetings of the Administrative Council, the “Hours Working Group” was comprised of: Pat Allen (LSD), Tim Cole (PSED), Kathleen Kern (CPS), Nancy O’Brien (SSD), Marek Sroka (ASD), Bruce Swann (AHD), Jeff Schrader (Administration), and Scott Walter (Administration).

Meeting Schedule

The Hours WG met on July 6, 2010, and July 13, 2010, in 428 Library.

Recommendations

In the time available, the WG was unable to reach consensus on a single plan for bringing standardization and savings to Library Hours planning, but was able to identify three scenarios that the Library should consider in planning for future changes, e.g., beginning in FY12.

Note: Assuming no plan is implemented prior to FY12, specifics of the plan may change to reflect the consolidation of current Library units as part of the New Service Models program. The Geology Library, now slated to close in August 2010, is not included in these plans.

Scenario 1

In Scenario 1, we present a 4-tiered approach to Library Hours. The (+/-/0) after each unit name refers to the change in the proposed open hours per week in the rubric below when compared with Fall 2009 hours. This is a model for how the 4-tiered approach might be applied, but the WG did not reach consensus on the assignment of all units to the tiers below.
