  1. Welcome New Members/Review ChargeThe Library Diversity Committee provides leadership and guidance to the Library by encouraging awareness about and discussions of diversity. Specifically, the Committee will focus on diversity issues with regard to Library climate, staff training and development, services to patrons, and campus outreach.

    Working with Library Administration, the Human Resources Office, and the Staff Development and Training Committee, the Library Diversity Committee will establish and prioritize goals regarding the provision of diversity services and training. The Committee will also plan and promote diversity activities within the Library. Finally, the Committee will support, if and when appropriate, the work of the Library’s Affirmative action Officer and Equal Employment Opportunity Committee

    • ClimateQUAL Implementation Team Recommendations – EC has advised that the recommendations in this report fall under SDTC. See this email from Nancy O’Brien:Due to concerns about an increasing number of committees and assignments in the Library, the Executive Committee has decided that rather than creating an Organizational Climate Steering Team, the proposed work as recommended in the report should be folded into the Staff Development and Training Committee. Please let us know if you would like to discuss this decision.

      I and the SDTC members have concerns about this. Please look over the CQ Implementation Team report before Tuesday if you can, especially pp. 4-7.

    Minute taking duty is assigned alphabetically. Cindy will send out the assignments.
  3. Approve July meeting minutes
    July meeting minutes approved with edit of “Planning Meeting Agenda” changed to “Meeting Minutes.”
  4. Inclusive Illinois Day
    • Set up
      Cindy will set up. She requested a laptop so people can sign the Individual Inclusive Illinois Commitment. The table will have post-it notes so people can write down what inclusive means to them. Zoe will bring candy if the expenditure is approved by Cherié Weible.
    • Volunteers
      There is a gap from 12:30-1 p.m. Cindy will try to come down at that time. Angie will check if she can make it over. Angie volunteered to help with clean up.
  5. News and Updates

      Zoe is taking part in the Inclusive Illinois Leadership workshop series.
    • Jessica Ballard will join committee as intern; she is a resident librarian.
    • Communitas –local social justice library group
      There will be a steering committee meeting Friday, 9/15.
  6. Discussion Items
    • Social events consolidation/retreat
      Cindy and the chairs of LSSC, LCAP, Staff Development and Training plan to meet to develop talking points around this issue. LSSC will meet with Bill Mischo in October to discuss this issue. If the number of community/relationship building opportunities are reduced, what will be put in place to foster a sense of community?
    • ClimateQUAL Implementation Team RecommendationsEC has advised that the recommendations in this report fall under SDTC.       Cindy discussed the Implementation Team recommendation. At this time, they would like to postpone the decision to fold the responsibility into the Staff Development and Training Committee until the new Organizational Development and Training Coordinator is hired.

      Ellen will send an update. There may be couple of events that the committee can co-sponsor.
    • Additional training from ISSS
      There are two additional modules offered by ISSS that build on the workshop offered this past July.
    • Continue brown bag monthly discussions or do a Cultural Connections series (See July minutes.)
      The Cultural Connections series will be similar to the Creative Connections series. It is replacing the brown bag series. It would be held over the lunch hour in 106. It would give people a chance to share their culture. See the last bullet point of 5. Programming Ideas in the July 11, 2017 minutes for potential ideas.
    • October Disability Awareness Month
      Zoe is working on scheduling a Disability Ally training for October.
    • Events with iSchool Diversity Committee
  8. Notes
    • The Illinois Library Association keynote speaker, Vernā Myers, is supposed to be a very powerful speaker. The committee may want to ask Cherié for funding to send a few people to the conference. The conference is being held at Tinley Park, October 10-12, 2017.
