Minutes

Welcome to new LSSC Members:

This was the first LSSC meeting for new members Kyle McCaffrey from Central Access Services and Julie Bumpus from Technical Services.  Welcome, Julie and Kyle!

Visit from John Wilkin:

University Librarian John Wilkin visited to discuss the new plan for restructuring the reporting structure for University Library Faculty, which was to be distributed via LibNews on Monday, Sept. 14th.

Future reporting from Faculty Meetings:

Since Barb Trumpinski and Julie Watkins, who are leaving LSSC, were our members who’d been attending and reporting on the Library Faculty meetings, we need new volunteers from the committee to cover this duty.  Sandy Wolf volunteered to attend the next Library Faculty meeting.  We discussed the possibility of rotating this duty among LSSC members and planned to discuss it further at the next meeting, with our chair Jim Cotter in attendance.

Library Service Recognition Program:

The annual University Library Service Recognition program for Library staff will be held on Wed., Oct. 29th, from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. in the ARC (Activities & Recreation Center, 201 E. Peabody Dr., Champaign).  Breakfast will be provided and employees who have reached significant milestones in their service will be recognized.

Division reports:

Area Studies Division:  Lisa Renee reported that Mary Laskowski, Associate Professor of Collection Management Services, visited the Area Studies Division meeting.  Mary mentioned that media selections ordering is now being done at the Undergraduate Library and that the Oak Street Facility now has a public reading room.  The International & Area Studies Library designed a new website. This has been sent to Robert Slater to activate the change.

Central Access Services:  Dani reported that the Central Access Services Division updated their bylaws with clarifications of who is on their Advisory Committee and who is eligible to vote on bylaws changes (tenured and tenure-track faculty).  Division members also discussed evaluation procedures for Academic Professionals and Library Operations Associates.

Residence Hall Libraries:  Laura reported that the Residence Hall Libraries had just published their first newsletter, which will soon be distributed to Residence Hall Directors and Advisors for display throughout the halls.  The Residence Hall Libraries are all holding Open Houses this month.

None of the other library divisions had met since the August LSSC meeting.

ALA Midwinter Meeting:

Since ALA Midwinter will be held in Chicago in January 2015, Sandy suggested that LSSC request funds to send staff to the conference.  As there is no Reaching Forward South conference this fall, perhaps the funds normally used to send staff there could be used to send staff to ALA midwinter instead.  We will discuss this further at our next meeting.

Nominating Staff for Recognition:

As a reminder, the due date for nominating staff members for Civil Service Recognition is Sept. 25th.  Please contact Human Resources if you’d like to nominate someone for this award.

Next LSSC Meeting:

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 9th.
