Minutes

1.  Safety Warning – Kaufman

Asian, Asian-American, and other women have been the victims in approximately 25 attacks on or near campus in the last few months.  These women have been attacked from behind by one or two assailants.  The Chancellor urges everyone to be on the look-out, not to walk alone, and to take advantage of Night Rides and police escorts.  The Chancellor is also urging departments to designate gathering sites where people can meet others to walk with.

The Library will post notices in all of its buildings giving information.  Please encourage the staff at circulation desks to caution people to walk in groups, especially late at night and to allow people to use your phone to call for Night Rides or police escorts. Whistles will also be available to the staff and patrons.  We need to be as pro-active as possible.

2.  Budget Planning – Clark, Kaufman

Each division has been given the charge that came from the Provost/Chancellor and a list of scenarios drawn up by the Budget Group.  The Divisions are to put together a budget that shows what they would do if there was a 2% cut or a 4% increase (with 1% going to Administration for salary increases and taxes).  The Divisions cannot take straight across-the-board cuts, but must develop plans that meet the Library’s highest priorities.  Also, each Division is asked to develop scenarios for where they want to be in five years: what changes need to be made, what things to keep, and what things to get rid of.  The sky is the limit, within reason.  The deadline is December 13.  Plans will be discussed at a joint AC/EC meeting on December 16; based on those discussions, the Budget Group will draft a plan that will be discussed by AC, EC, and the Senate Committee on the Library and at the January faculty meeting.  The final version will be sent to the Provost before the end of January.

3.  Academic Professional Work Week – Clark, Kelly

The work week hours for academic professionals have never been formally set in the Library.  There was discussion about the hours.
