  • 30th Anniversary Celebration (2021) – Brainstorming
    1. Clara asked the group for brainstorming ideas for the upcoming 30th Anniversary Celebration for the Mortenson Center. Ideas/suggestions below:
      • Ken Salo: he will be teaching an international course at the community level and this would be a great way to collaborate with issues related to Chai Wai. This would be of interest to community libraries to showcase what the Mortenson Center is actively doing.
      • Lisa Hinchliffe: as there are hundreds of Center alumni, we could arrange for an event that lasts 24 hours around the world showcasing mini 5 minute videos (videos of posters, photos, etc) with the emphasis on “Because I was a Mortenson Center Associate…”; Lean upon the alumni of the program and do something representational of a global Mortenson Center community. Lisa explained that this was an idea from something she previously saw where PDF’s and Zoom were used to create these videos. Lisa said she has virtual software links to share if interested.
      • Emily Knox: Mirror’s Lisa’s ideas; show the work that the Mortenson Center has done over time as the Center is unknown in areas across the globe; push this emphasis across the University – great idea for marketing strategies
      • Qiang Jin: Make a video starting from the first Center director, going through their leadership through the present; ask during the video for people to present for the Mortenson Center, expanding on WHY they were interested in the program
      • William Schlaack: suggested an oral history of all of the previous projects that the Mortenson Center has participated in since its inception
      • Ken Salo: suggested the Center reflect upon the resurgence of FAKE NEWS, contrasting how archival and online news gets compromised; address the social needs related to these concerns.
        1. William Schlaack added to Ken Salo’s idea that it would be great to hear from other libraries from other countries around the world on how they reflect on fake news
      • Lisa Hinchliffe: in her current position she has connections with UNESCO and it might be possible to use that connection with UNESCO to network going forward, bringing programming together
      • Dara Goldman: thought that if we focus more locally, have service learning courses as many are halted right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide; establish as if students were doing an internship with Spanish community members, linking up these students to create programs
