  1. Budget Update – KaufmanWe won’t know about if there is going to be a tuition increase until after the State passes its budget. There will be nothing definitive until late June or early July.  The Provost sent out a message in response to articles in the DI and News Gazette about disproportionate layoffs of staff and asked us to submit a budget reflecting an 8% cut.The first 1 ½% would come from back-filled money that has been generated from open positions and expenditure reductions.  We cannot and will not cut tenure or tenure track faculty positions.  Most APs require a one-year notice of non-reappointment which won’t affect the next year’s budget.  The Provost has requested that we don’t cut any GA positions because of the adverse affect on GSLIS.

    We have $100,000 unassigned that the University made permanent last year.  The Collection bottom line is what grows when the state has money for materials.  Next, we can move $300,000 of obligations from Services to Collections on a one-time basis, causing a hit to the Service budget.  Then student wages would be reduced by $600,000.  A loss of students would mean cutting hours in smaller units and reducing services in all units. The impending rise in the state minimum wage will also have an impact on the buying power of our student wage budget. To get to 8% would also mean cutting a large number of staff positions.

    In summary, we think we could take up to a $1 million cut without laying off staff.

    Paula asked for input into what the Committee felt about cuts in the Collection versus cuts in staff positions.  The Committee was undecided.  They didn’t want to see the Collection cut too much and they also didn’t want to lose too many staff positions.

  2. Issues related to Budget Reductions – Kaufman, Burger, K. SchmidtGAs with 50% appointments will be cut back to 38%.  This will not impact their tuition waivers.We, along with UI Chicago and UI Springfield, are asking Elsevier to consider us as one institution instead of three and to only have one print copy.  Karen will work with a small group of librarians here and come up with a scenario for what a pricing mode might look like and how much money it might save.

    Michael Norman has developed an aggregator overlap database showing that we have a number of sources where we have four or five different copies of the same thing.  We will have a library faculty forum to talk about where cuts might be made.  Continue thinking about duplicates, print/electronic duplicates in different areas, and ways we can partner with Chicago and Springfield.

    Paula is meeting with the Provost this week.  One of the things she will discuss with him is the consolidation of a couple of units.  All Divisions, during their discussions, should be looking for ways to work together if their staff was to be reduced.

    We may only be able to offer Electronic Reserves in the future.  We may need funds for copyright clearance and moving a person into a centralized location to take care of them.

  3. E-Mail Issues – SandoreThe question has arisen as to whether email signature lines should include urls for personal web pages and quotes.

    The University guidelines state that a person is prohibited from attaching urls for personal businesses or political campaign slogans.

    Should we set guidelines or policy regarding email?

    The committee discussed that we could have guidelines, but our policy should be the same as the University’s.  Beth asked that the Coordinators talk to their Divisions and send her any feedback.

  4. AnnouncementsKaufman – Karen and Paula made an announcement that the LON format has been updated.  Kim will be sending out a message inviting input and sharing the various categories.  There will be links to minutes instead of having them in their entirety in LON.  There will be a place for news and updates from units.  Hopefully this will help cut down on the number of LIBNEWS and LIBFAC emails.
