  1. Approved May meeting minutes             All
  2. No additions to the Agenda
  3. Thank Outgoing Members—Zoe and Angie
Donna Hoffman, the ex officio HR representative, will be replaced by Zoe. Other continuing members on the committee are Cindy, Jessica Ballard, Atoma, Laila Hussein-Moustafa, Heather, and JJ.

EC is still deciding on committee appointments.

Angie and Zoe will meet to discuss updating the Diversity Committee website.

  4. No Potluck this year—Other ideas for building community             All
Due to busy schedules, there will be no potluck this year. Zoe suggested continuing the Cultural Connections Series as a way to build community. This would be an informal gathering where people could bring a food to share that represents them. The event would be scheduled so people could drop in over their lunch hour. This would serve as a way for library staff to get to know each other. The event could be held the week of July 9th or 16th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Zoe will look at the schedule for a date.  The committee plans to provide water. Heather suggested that we invite Jake MacGregor, the new Organizational Development and Training Coordinator.

This fall the Cultural Connections Series may have a family games session.

  5. Finalize Updating of the Diversity Statement
Committee approved the third revision of the University of Illinois Diversity Statement (see Related Documents). Cindy will send the statement to EC for approval.
  6. Brainstorming for 2018-2019 events:
  • Inclusive Illinois Day
  • Cultural Connections Series—work with ISchool
Committee agreed that we would like to continue having student panels as part of the Cultural Connection Series. Atoma will speak with Antonio Sotomayor and Mara Thacker about finding potential students to serve on panels.
  • Implicit Bias training
Tracy Kleparski would be willing to work with us to on an implicit bias training session. Implicit bias has broad implications in regards to hiring student workers, performing evaluations, and interacting with patrons. Zoe will work with Tracy on this training.
  • Additional training from ISSS
ISSS offers three training tracks: Blue, Orange, and Gray. ISSS offers certificates for completing a track. Each track is made of up four modules. Committee may look into offering certification for a track over the course of a year. More information about the tracks and modules can be found at http://isss.illinois.edu/publications/training.html.
  • Encouraging Student Workers to enter the Profession
It might be productive to have a joint meeting of the iSchool Diversity Committee to discuss this issue. Cindy will reach out to the iSchool.  Committee discussed what kind of events might be effective. Zoe talked about the possibility of offering an internship for credit or certificate. This could be used on a resume. Another possibility would be offering job shadowing opportunities. The committee will need to find people willing to be shadowed and talk to supervisors. Supervisors will be involved with communication with student workers, encouraging student workers to participate, and to discuss compensation. Zoe will talk to Tina Reinhart about getting the list of supervisors.
  • Other
Cindy will email Clara Chu to see if a date has been set for Community-Library Inter-Action (CLIA) Illinois Workshop.

The Accessibility Advisory Group meets on June 13 to discuss outreach and programming for the coming year. JJ will report back at the next meeting.

Committee discussed the need to retain diverse individuals.
