Report on search for Assistant Dean of Business Operations:

Sandy, as staff representative with Administrative Council, reported on the status of the search for an individual to replace Rod Allen as the Assistant Dean of Business Operations, whose duties include serving as the chair of the Budget Group.  There are four final candidates whom the committee is in the process of interviewing.  One issue which is currently very important concerning the budget is the Library’s exempt status on Senate Bill 51’s procurement regulations.  This status is in effect through this December, and it is hoped that this status will be renewed.

New LSSC Member:

The Library Staff Support Committee approved the induction of Debora Pfeiffer to the committee.  She will serve as the liaison from International Area Studies.

Recognition of Paula Kaufman:

LSSC recognized Paula for her service to the Library and its staff as part of the recent New Employee Recognition event.  She expressed her appreciation for this recognition to Jim Cotter following the event.

Invitation to the new University Librarian:

We plan to invite John Wilkin, the incoming University Library, to an LSSC meeting this fall.  Jim will put in a scheduling request to ask John to attend the October or November meeting, so that he will have some time to get settled into his new position beforehand.  He will start at UIUC on August 16th.

ALA Exhibits Trips:

LSSC members Jim Cotter and Barb Trumpinski, Diana Pye from cataloging, and Lonnie Clark from the Undergraduate Library went to ALA to attend the exhibits on Saturday of the conference.  There were lots of booths on digitization and automation, giveaways (including books!), and opportunities to meet international attendees.  Jim and Barb highly recommend the experience and hope that more staff members will take advantage of this opportunity in the future.  ALA is held in Chicago about every four years, so we expect that it will next be held there in 2017.  The two staff scholarship attendees of the whole conference said they enjoyed it and learned a lot.

Reaching Forward South Conference:

This annual regional conference is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20th, in Springfield.  Early Bird registration is due Aug. 16th.  Jim will seek Library support for staff members to attend.  Once we know how many spots will be approved, he will send out an announcement to Lib-News to invite applicants, who will be given spots on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to those who have not had a chance to attend this conference in the past.

Faculty Meeting Report:

Julie reported on the last faculty meeting chaired by Paula Kaufman.
Tom Teper presented information on the CIC shared print repository, which is in the process of verifying that all issues are present of each journal to be consolidated in the repository.  Once print volumes that will be held in the repository at Indiana University have been de-accessioned from the UIUC Library, 29,000 feet of shelf space (approximately equivalent to one floor of the West Main Stacks) will be recouped.
Paula reported that the new Fiscal Year budget can fill 500 new positions campus-wide, but that many more than 500 position requests have been made.
There was discussion of how to prepare documents to welcome the new University Librarian, including frequent mentions of the importance of shared governance.
Sue Searing said that she plans to be very strict on annual reports this year, because they will be an important way of informing the new University Librarian of what’s going on throughout the Library system.
Maria Bonn, who will serve as a new Senior Lecturer in GSLIS, was approved for a zero-time appointment as a Library faculty member.
Division Reports:  Many divisions have not met since our last LSSC meeting, due to summer vacations.  Special Collections did not meet, but they are discussing the change of the name of the Archives to a more detailed name.  Adriana Cuervo has left the Sousa Archives for a position at Rutgers.  Life Sciences did not meet, but the new Vet-Med Librarian, Erin Kerby, has been hired.

Next LSSC Meeting:

Our next meeting will take place on Thursday, Aug. 8th, at 9 a.m.  Please meet at Library 230, so that we can take a Library van over to tour the Oak St. facility.
