{"id":2615,"date":"2021-01-04T14:57:14","date_gmt":"2021-01-04T14:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/?p=2615"},"modified":"2024-05-22T17:20:36","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T17:20:36","slug":"todd-viereggs-1952-memories-of-the-marching-illini","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/2021\/01\/04\/todd-viereggs-1952-memories-of-the-marching-illini\/","title":{"rendered":"Todd Vieregg&#8217;s 1952 Memories of the Marching Illini"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/1952-Marching-Illini-Band-Poster-764x1024-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4217\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/1952-Marching-Illini-Band-Poster-764x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"764\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/1952-Marching-Illini-Band-Poster-764x1024-1.jpg 764w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/1952-Marching-Illini-Band-Poster-764x1024-1-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px\" \/><\/a>The Center received a duplication request from Todd Vieregg in early December asking for a copy of the Marching Illini band&#8217;s 1952 poster of its field shows that school year.\u00a0 When he received a copy of the poster he wrote the following about his experiences performing with the band that school year under Everett Kissinger, and agreed to let us post his remembrances on our website.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>All male students were required to receive military training \u00a0in the ROTC (Reserve Officers\u2019 Training Corps) because the U of I was a \u201cLand Grant College\u201d.\u00a0 Students who were in the Marching Band were exempt from ROTC because marching in the Band was deemed to be an appropriate substitute for marching with the ROTC.\u00a0 I believe that the U of I had three bands:\u00a0 The Concert Band, comprised of the very best musicians, the First Regimental Band, comprised of musicians with the next lower tier of musical skills, and, I think, the Second Regimental Band.\u00a0 I played Bass Clarinet in the First Regimental Band, which performed at U of I football games.
