{"id":1928,"date":"2018-03-23T17:26:25","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T17:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/?p=1928"},"modified":"2024-05-22T18:22:07","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T18:22:07","slug":"sousa-archives-celebrates-international-jazz-day-on-april-24-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/2018\/03\/23\/sousa-archives-celebrates-international-jazz-day-on-april-24-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Sousa Archives Celebrates International Jazz Day On April 24, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/Americas-Jazz-Ambassadors-14-reducedsize.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4266 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/Americas-Jazz-Ambassadors-14-reducedsize-274x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/Americas-Jazz-Ambassadors-14-reducedsize-274x300.jpg 274w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/Americas-Jazz-Ambassadors-14-reducedsize.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On\u00a0 April 24th the Champaign-Urbana, Illinois community will\u00a0 again celebrate\u00a0 the run-up to International Jazz Day with live music and historical films at the Art Theater, the first of two free events that evening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>America&#8217;s Jazz Ambassadors: Joy to the World<\/em><\/strong> highlights the U.S. State Department program that sent Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck and many other exceptional musicians abroad to show the world what freedom and democracy were all about.\u00a0 At the height of the Cold War the United States created the &#8220;Jazz Ambassadors program to bring the best of American culture to world&#8230;and exchange ideas and friendship.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several Illinois connections will also be highlighted, including the University of Illinois jazz band under the direction of John Garvey.\u00a0 Morgan Powell, Pulitzer Prize-nominated composer and trombonist, will share recollections of having toured Eastern Europe with Garvey&#8217;s jazz ensemble under the auspices of the State Department.\u00a0 Randy Salman, professor of music at DePauw University, spent ten years with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra touring the U.S. and Canada as well as Egypt during the SJMO&#8217;s\u00a0 2008 State Department tour.\u00a0 Salman also has many tales to tell and has shared them with the evening&#8217;s presenters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tom Birkner, who succeeded Garvey as director of the University of Illinois jazz bands, and WEFT Radio jazz host, Bob Selby, will offer commentary on the films and elicit\u00a0 stories of Powell&#8217;s and Salman&#8217;s State Department tour experiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Following the Art Theater program, an after-party at the Esquire Lounge will feature the Champaign Central High School Jazz Combos, playing from 7:00-9:00 under the direction of John Currey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For more information about this exciting programming call 217-333-4577 or email Amani Ayad at <a href=\"mailto:ucgc.champaign@gmail.com\">ucgc.champaign@gmail.com<\/a> or Scott Schwartz at <a href=\"mailto:sousa@illinois.edu\">sousa@illinois.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On\u00a0 April 24th the Champaign-Urbana, Illinois community will\u00a0 again celebrate\u00a0 the run-up to International Jazz Day with live music and historical films at the Art Theater, the first of two free events that evening.
