{"id":1624,"date":"2016-10-31T19:44:17","date_gmt":"2016-10-31T19:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/?p=1624"},"modified":"2024-05-22T18:57:25","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T18:57:25","slug":"new-henry-fillmore-exhibit-opens-today-to-kick-off-american-music-month-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/2016\/10\/31\/new-henry-fillmore-exhibit-opens-today-to-kick-off-american-music-month-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"New Henry Fillmore Exhibit Opens Today to Kick Off American Music Month 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/Henry-Fillmore-and-Mike-the-Radio-Hound-1-1024x726-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4369\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/Henry-Fillmore-and-Mike-the-Radio-Hound-1-1024x726-1-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/Henry-Fillmore-and-Mike-the-Radio-Hound-1-1024x726-1-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/Henry-Fillmore-and-Mike-the-Radio-Hound-1-1024x726-1-768x545.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/Henry-Fillmore-and-Mike-the-Radio-Hound-1-1024x726-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Sousa Archives newest exhibit, &#8220;Henry Fillmore: The Man Behind the Name,&#8221;\u00a0 opens today to kick off this November&#8217;s American Music Month celebration,\u00a0<em>Klaxons, Screamers, and Rolling Thunder: The Unconventional Henry Fillmore.\u00a0 <\/em>Fillmore was an unconventional trombonist, composer, and bandmaster who loved circus music, American football, and his music-loving dog. \u00a0The hustle of Cincinnati\u2019s river wharves, and his and Uncle Fred\u2019s love of the many circuses that passed through town often distracted the young Henry from the drudgeries of school, piano lessons, and the weekly trips to church. \u00a0The trombone fascinated him the most because it always led the circus band, but his formal trombone lessons were short-lived and his unruly teenage humor continued to embarrass his family.\u00a0 Returning to Cincinnati homesick after running away with the John Robinson\u2019s 10 Big Shows Circus, Henry\u2019s father agreed to send him to the Miami Military Institute to complete his education.\u00a0 After graduating from the Institute in 1902 he was given a position in his father\u2019s church hymnal company, but he wasn\u2019t happy unless he was playing his trombone.\u00a0 In 1904 Henry fell in love with Mabel May Jones, an exotic vaudeville dancer he saw performing at the St. Louis World Exposition during the family\u2019s summer vacation, and he eventually married her much to his parents\u2019 disdain.\u00a0 To escape tensions with Henry&#8217;s parents the couple joined the Lemon Brothers Circus where Henry was responsible for playing the trombone and leading the circus band.
