{"id":1566,"date":"2016-09-08T00:08:42","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T00:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/?p=1566"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:06:09","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T20:06:09","slug":"urbana-champaign-local-music-oral-history-with-james-michael-powers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/2016\/09\/08\/urbana-champaign-local-music-oral-history-with-james-michael-powers\/","title":{"rendered":"Urbana-Champaign Local Music Oral History with James Michael Powers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/James-Michael-Powers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4388\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/James-Michael-Powers-300x157.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/James-Michael-Powers-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/sousa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2024\/05\/James-Michael-Powers.jpg 648w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Beginning in 2013 the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music launched its Urbana-Champaign Local Music Preservation Initiative to better document the community\u2019s vital music heritage.\u00a0 A significant part of this effort has focused for the last three years on the long-term preservation of the historical papers, photographs, sound recordings, business records, and advertising broadsides that were produced by the musicians, venue operators, managers, audio engineers, and producers who helped shape the Urbana-Champaign music scene between the 1960s and 1990s.\u00a0 In addition the Center&#8217;s staff have conducted numerous oral history interviews with many of these musicians, business operators, and audio engineers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Sousa Archives&#8217; interview with James Michael Powers, one of the founding musicians of the Finchley Boys band during the late 1960s, is the first of several newly transcribed interviews to be made available online for those interested in learning more about the Urbana-Champaign community&#8217;s\u00a0 vital music scene.\u00a0 Powers&#8217; June 12, 2015 interview describes his first-hand experiences as a young drummer growing up and making music in Central Illinois as a member of the Finchley Boys as well as his time performing in different bands in Boston and Houston.\u00a0 He also talks about the many joys and challenges that he has encountered over the years as a performer and the many venues that he often performed at as member of our community.\u00a0 Powers&#8217;
