Allen (1848-1920).\u00a0She\u00a0was only 22 years old when she was hired at the\u00a0University and given the major tasks of overseeing female education and developing instruction in domestic science for women. Despite little institutional support and with no precedent upon which to model such a program, Allen offered a full new course of study during the 1875-1876 academic year. Her early work helped make higher education more obtainable for women. <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/women-halls\/#note01\">[1]<\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5208\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5208\" style=\"width: 129px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/03\/pl_0007439.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5208\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/03\/pl_0007439-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"Alta G. Saunders<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Blaisdell and Saunders, halls\u00a0within Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Hall (PAR), are\u00a0named after Daisy Luana Blaisdell (1866-1952) and Alta G. Saunders (1886-1948). <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/women-halls\/#note02\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0Blaisdell was the first housemother \u00a0of Illinois&#8217; first women&#8217;s residence hall, and\u00a0also served as a professor of German for over three decades (1900-1931). Saunders was a professor of Business English, later becoming the Chair of the Business English Division. She\u00a0also served as the director of the Alumni Association. <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/women-halls\/#note03\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5182\" style=\"width: 157px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/03\/0006449.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5182\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/03\/0006449-300x269.jpg\" alt=\"Maudelle T.B. Bousfield (c. 1906)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of the University&#8217;s newest residence halls is named after the highly influential Maudelle Tanner Brown Bousfield. She was the first African-American woman to graduate from the University of Illinois\u00a0and did so with honors in 1906. It was quickly renamed after Mary E. Busey (1854-1930) and Laura B. Evans (1860-1932) who were both members of the University&#8217;s Board of Trustees and were integral in securing housing for women. <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/women-halls\/#note05\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5203\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5203\" style=\"width: 173px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/03\/leonard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5203\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2016\/03\/leonard.jpg\" alt=\"Maria Leonard\" width=\"173\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maria Leonard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The wings of the Lincoln Avenue Residence Hall (LAR) are named after two women as well, Maria Leonard (1880-1976) and Mariam A. Shelden\u00a0(1912-1975). Trelease (1894-1957) also has a hall\u00a0of the Florida Avenue Residence Halls (FAR) named after her. Wardall (1877-1936). Wardall was a Professor of Home Economics and later head the Department of Home Economics.
