McKinley gave $100,000 for construction of University hospital.<\/li>\n<li>On April 21st, 136 students withdrew for military and farm work. This figure grew to 1,000 by May 5th.<\/li>\n<li>Military instruction began.<\/li>\n<li>YMCA and new Women\u2019s Residence Hall used as barracks.<\/li>\n<li><em>Daily Illini<\/em> launched \u201csmokes and chocolates\u201d fund for Illini overseas.<\/li>\n<li>Fall enrollment was twenty percent below previous year\u2019s number.<\/li>\n<li>Panhellenic Council abolished dances for the year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1918<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>University service flag raised with 2,960 stars\u2013one for each Illini in the service.<\/li>\n<li><em>Daily Illini<\/em> published semi-centennial edition.<\/li>\n<li>Gamma Epsilon Pi established.<\/li>\n<li>Dean of Women Fanny Gates resigned. She was succeeded by Ruby Mason.<\/li>\n<li>Some 3,000 students enrolled in Student Army Training Corps (SATC).<\/li>\n<li>Woman\u2019s Residence Hall (Busey Hall) completed. (This was the first residence hall built by the University.)<\/li>\n<li>Phi Delta Psi became national \u2018Mortarboard.\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Matrix re-organized as Theta Sigma Chi.<\/li>\n<li>Chapter of Jewish sorority Delta Alpha Omega installed.<\/li>\n<li>Homecoming canceled because of war.<\/li>\n<li>Influenza pandemic struck campus.
