Originally located north of University Hall, the Senior Bench now sits west of the Illini Union.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1901<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Trustees established school of dentistry.<\/li>\n<li>Seniors decided to wear caps and gowns at commencement exercises.<\/li>\n<li>Chicago Nationals baseball team (later known as The Cubs) established training quarters at University.<\/li>\n<li>Students rioted at Pan-American circus, with several being injured.<\/li>\n<li>Pan-Hellenic Council organized for purpose of adopting \u201cinter-sorority rushing compact.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Thomas Arkle Clark named dean of undergraduates. He would hold the post until 1931.<\/li>\n<li>University Senate created.<\/li>\n<li>Wave of hazing swept campus. Bearing inscription &#8216;Class of 1904,&#8217; this class memorial now anchors the flagpole in front of Kenney Gym Annex.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1905<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Captain of UI baseball team killed, several other students injured in train wreck.<\/li>\n<li>Rule promulgated forbidding all absences.<\/li>\n<li>Woman\u2019s Building (now known as the English Building) dedicated.<\/li>\n<li>Responsibilities of Dean of Women divided between Eunice Daniels and Martha Kyle.<\/li>\n<li>Western Intercollegiate Basketball League organized.<\/li>\n<li>Delta Upsilon chapter formed.<\/li>\n<li>Class of 1905 donated lantern decorating north entrance of Library (Altgeld Hall).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1906<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Illinois basketball team defeated Indiana 27-24 in first game played by the Illini men.<\/li>\n<li>Chapters of Sigma Kappa, Delta Rho Sigma and Acacia formed.<\/li>\n<li>Ionian and Athenian literary societies organized.<\/li>\n<li>First junior smoker held.<\/li>\n<li>First interscholastic circus occurred.<\/li>\n<li>Council of Administration allowed men to visit Woman\u2019s Building from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. if they applied to the head of the Woman\u2019s Hall.<\/li>\n<li>Phenix\u2013a new senior society\u2013 created.<\/li>\n<li>Class of 1901 formed first permanent class organization among alumni.<\/li>\n<li>Comprehensive alumni directory published.<\/li>\n<li>Presbyterian synod established campus ministry.<\/li>\n<li>Room in Burnham Hospital set aside as a student ward.<\/li>\n<li>Cosmopolitan Club and Scribblers\u2019 Club formed.<\/li>\n<li>Mechanical Engineering Laboratory completed.<\/li>\n<li>Maudelle Tanner Brown Bousfield became first African-American woman graduate of UI.<\/li>\n<li>Class of 1906 donated sun dial to University. This event would evolve into the Engineering Open House.<\/li>\n<li>Illini student Ben Tomlinson won Rhodes scholarship.<\/li>\n<li>Last saloon in Champaign-Urbana closed.<\/li>\n<li>A two-story brick structure on northwest corner of Wright and Green streets was the first building for commercial purposes to be constructed near campus.<\/li>\n<li>First issue of <em>Alumni Quarterly<\/em> published.<\/li>\n<li>Name of <em>Illini<\/em> changed to <em>Daily Illini<\/em> and size expanded from four pages, five columns, to eight pages, four columns.<\/li>\n<li>Lily Kollack appointed Dean of Women.<\/li>\n<li>Auditorium dedicated.<\/li>\n<li>Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Kappa installed.<\/li>\n<li>First public presentation of football \u2018I\u2019s\u2019 occurred.<\/li>\n<li>Delta Tau Delta house damaged by fire.<\/li>\n<li>Class of 1907 gave to University bust of Longfellow, sculpted by Lorado Taft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1908<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Re-organized Graduate School formally opened.<\/li>\n<li>State Board of Health ordered vaccination of students because of smallpox outbreak in Champaign-Urbana.<\/li>\n<li>YMCA building completed.<\/li>\n<li>Jewish student society Ivrim organized.<\/li>\n<li>Committee on Student Organizations created.<\/li>\n<li>Phi Kappa Psi launched a new fraternity district south of John Street when they built a house at 911 S. Fourth Street.
