This was the first color rush at the University, in which members of the freshmen and sophomore classes battled for possession of their respective class colors.<\/li>\n<li>Regent Peabody resigned. Professor Thomas J. Burrill appointed acting regent.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty tenure and sabbatical leaves initiated.<\/li>\n<li>Philomathean and Adelphic societies founded Star Course.<\/li>\n<li><em>Illini<\/em> representatives helped form Western College Press Association.<\/li>\n<li>Military drill required only of freshmen and sophomores.<\/li>\n<li>First glee club started.<\/li>\n<li>New code of rules promulgated for students. Loyalty oath was eliminated and warning system replaced use of demerits. Entering students no longer required to pledge that they would not join a fraternity<\/li>\n<li>Alpha Gamma chapter of Kappa Sigma formed.<\/li>\n<li>Kappa Kappa chapter of Sigma Chi reorganized. Voluntary convocation services served as replacement.<\/li>\n<li>University students required to be at least sixteen years of age.<\/li>\n<li>Courses leading to Ph.D. and Sc.D were established.<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Draper named University regent.<\/li>\n<li>Local fraternity Delta Delta Delta became Beta Upsilon chapter of Delta Tau Delta<\/li>\n<li>Title of \u201cregent\u201d changed to \u201cpresident.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Illini<\/em> published weekly. Control of publication placed in the hands of students.<\/li>\n<li>Council of Administration formed, assumed control over student affairs.<\/li>\n<li>Juniors published the first yearbook, which later adopted name <em>Illio<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty and students adopted orange and navy blue as the University\u2019s colors.<\/li>\n<li>Engineering Hall completed. Class of 1894 had stone plaque affixed to exterior of Engineering Hall, near main entrance, as class memorial.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1895<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Women\u2019s glee club formed.<\/li>\n<li>Students of Latin organized Sodalitas Latina.<\/li>\n<li>Nine sophomores suspended for kidnapping freshmen before freshmen social.<\/li>\n<li>Physical training department organized to include men and women.<\/li>\n<li>Gamma Zeta chapter of Alpha Tau Omega established.<\/li>\n<li>First sophomore cotillion held.<\/li>\n<li>Sororities Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Alpha Theta were formed. The UI lost this first-ever intercollegiate debate held at the University.<\/li>\n<li>First woman\u2019s edition of <em>Illini<\/em> published.<\/li>\n<li>Dr. John M.
