This resource, &#8220;Student Life at Illinois: A Timeline,&#8221; is the result of an effort to compile such a list. Navigate between the decades in the pane at right, or begin below with the events of 1867, the year it all began.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>1867-1879\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_661\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-661\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/0001164.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-661 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/0001164-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"John Milton Gregory, 1875\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/0001164-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/0001164.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Milton Gregory, 1875<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>1867<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Illinois Legislature passed act \u201cto provide for the organization, endowment and maintenance of the Illinois Industrial University.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>First meeting of the Board of Trustees elected <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/archon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=147\">John Milton Gregory<\/a> as regent of the Illinois Industrial University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1868<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>University inaugurated and formally opened on March 11th.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/archon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=2613\">Philomathean<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/archon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=2608\">Adelphic<\/a> literary societies are organized.<\/li>\n<li>Tuition set at $5.00 a term, $15.00 annually.<\/li>\n<li>Seventy-seven students were enrolled during the first term.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/archon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=2525\">University Band<\/a> organized.<\/li>\n<li>Thomas J. Burrill appointed assistant professor of natural history.<\/li>\n<li>First University catalog issued.<\/li>\n<li>Student attendance at daily chapel services made compulsory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1870<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Agricultural Society organized, became the Scientific Association.<\/li>\n<li>Department of mechanical engineering created.<\/li>\n<li>Trustees agreed to admit women in a 5-4 vote.<\/li>\n<li>A system of student government adopted consisting of a general assembly, a judicial department and an executive body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-547\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/elephant1870.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-547 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/elephant1870-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"The first university building known as &quot;The Elephant&quot; by students, circa 1870\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/elephant1870-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/elephant1870.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The first university building known as &#8220;The Elephant&#8221; by students, circa 1870<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>1871<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>University received its first building appropriation from the Illinois Legislature. The measure provided $75,000 for a building to cost no more than $150,000.<\/li>\n<li>Twenty-two women were reported to be in attendance at the school.<\/li>\n<li>Cornerstone of University Hall laid.<\/li>\n<li>University women organized Alethenai literary society.<\/li>\n<li>A contingent of 157 students sent to Chicago to help keep order during and after the Great Fire.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Student<\/em>, the first Illinois Industrial University student publication, appeared. It was published monthly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1872<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Chapter of Delta Tau Delta secretly organized.<\/li>\n<li>University YMCA organized.<\/li>\n<li>University established a boarding hall for women.<\/li>\n<li>First athletic contest at University occurred on May 8, 1872, when a student team defeated the Eagle Baseball Club by a score of 2-1.<\/li>\n<li>Class of 1872 donated to University a bronze medallion set within a stone tablet. Tablet was placed between double windows of University Hall. This was the first class gift.<\/li>\n<li>First presentation of \u201ccertificates\u201d to the following graduates: John J. Davis of Freeport, Willis A. Reiss of Belleville, Alonzo L. Whitcomb of Urbana, Stephen A. Reynolds of Belvidere, James N. Matthews of Mason, and Charles W. Ricker appointed assistant professor of architecture. One year later he was promoted to full professor.<\/li>\n<li>University hired elocution instructor Jennie C. Bryant.<\/li>\n<li>University students participated in formation of Illinois Collegiate Association (later the Illinois Intercollegiate Oratorical Association), and compete in first annual Intercollegiate<\/li>\n<li>Oratorical Contest.<\/li>\n<li>First Class Day\u2013an exercise by seniors on the Monday before graduation\u2013held.<\/li>\n<li>Louise C. Allen joined the faculty and established a domestic science course. In 1879 she married the recently widowed Regent Gregory.<\/li>\n<li>University Battalion took part in dedication of Lincoln Monument at Springfield.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/archon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=2608\">Adelphic<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/archon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=2613\">Philomathean<\/a> societies form Inter-Society Oratorical Association.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1875<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>University\u2019s Art Gallery formally opened its doors. \u201cIt opened a new epoch in all our lives,\u201d one student said of it.<\/li>\n<li>Board of Trustees permitted conscientious objectors to be excused from military drill.<\/li>\n<li>First annual exercises of the Alumni Association were held.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-663\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/0002623.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-663 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2014\/08\/0002623-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Morrow Plots, circa 1904\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Morrow Plots, circa 1904<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>1876<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Morrow Plots, America\u2019s oldest soil experiment field, were established.<\/li>\n<li>Under Regent Gregory\u2019s prodding, the Board of Trustees condemned secret societies. As a result, the Delta Tau Delta fraternity went underground.<\/li>\n<li>Class of 1876 donated an elm tree to the University. A boulder inscribed &#8216;Class of 1876&#8217; northeast of Altgeld Hall now marks former location of this tree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1877<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Class of 1877 donated an elm tree. The clock cost $300 and is now lodged in the north cupola of the Illini Union.<\/li>\n<li>The first degrees were granted. Requirements were set for the awarding of MS, ML and MA degrees.<\/li>\n<li>Seniors organized a dancing club.<\/li>\n<li>Chemistry Hall (now known as Harker Hall) constructed. Nathan Ricker was appointed University architect and dean of the College of Engineering.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Illini<\/em> advocated intercollegiate baseball matches and the adoption of school colors.<\/li>\n<li>University Baseball Association formed.<\/li>\n<li>Selim Peabody appointed professor of mechanical engineering.<\/li>\n<li>First \u201cfootball\u201d game played on campus on Thanksgiving Day. The game may have been soccer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1879<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Board of Trustees committee approved a woman\u2019s hall but was unable to finance construction.<\/li>\n<li>The University won a gold medal for its exhibit at Paris Exposition.<\/li>\n<li>Ira O. Baker named assistant professor of engineering.<\/li>\n<li>Tree planted by seniors uprooted.<\/li>\n<li>The charter of Delta Tau Delta withdrawn.<\/li>\n<li>First University intercollegiate baseball game held.
