Illinois Experts is an exciting joint project of the University Library and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. A new and growing resource, Experts showcases the depth and breadth of research and scholarship expertise on the Urbana-Champaign campus via an easily accessible web portal that fosters discovery of cutting-edge findings and ideas. With around 2,000 individual researcher profiles and over 125,000 publications available on the public portal already, Experts will soon include all tenure-system faculty at Illinois, along with a number of specialized and emeritus faculty and academic professional researchers.
Experts aims to keep profile information current and reliable by automating updates where possible and drawing on information from authoritative sources—including regular updates from campus human resources systems and weekly publications information updates from Elsevier’s Scopus citation and abstract database. Publication information can be supplemented through the use of one or more import modules that allow profile owners to easily search for and import their publications from other sources (including EBSCOhost, Mendeley, CrossRef, and WorldCat). Additional profile customization options are available to profile owners, including the ability to add a photo, a research statement, links to social media, or researcher identifiers (such as ORCID).
Over time, Experts will expand to include grants, patents, and other information related to the university’s research enterprise. Audiences for Experts include faculty, students, and staff from around campus; potential off-campus collaborators and research sponsors; partners in industry; as well as private citizens.
