{"id":817,"date":"2012-01-11T14:45:33","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T20:45:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nonsolusblog.wordpress.com\/?p=817"},"modified":"2012-01-11T14:45:33","modified_gmt":"2012-01-11T20:45:33","slug":"contemporary-line-drawing-and-couplet-in-an-incunable-incunabula-475-z42l-1490","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/2012\/01\/11\/contemporary-line-drawing-and-couplet-in-an-incunable-incunabula-475-z42l-1490\/","title":{"rendered":"Contemporary Line-Drawing and Couplet in an Incunable (Incunabula 475 Z42l 1490)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/01\/non-solus-post-2-0031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-824\" title=\"Lilium grammaticae title page\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/01\/non-solus-post-2-0031.jpg?w=225\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/01\/non-solus-post-2-0031.jpg 2304w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/01\/non-solus-post-2-0031-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/01\/non-solus-post-2-0031-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Wilhelmus Zenders de Wert. <em>Lilium grammaticae.<\/em> Cologne: Heinrich Quentell, 1490<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While cataloging a <a href=\"https:\/\/i-share-uiu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01CARLI_UIU\/gpjosq\/alma99625820412205899\">quarto edition<\/a> of the <em>Lilium grammaticae <\/em>of Wilhelmus Zenders de Wert, I ran across an interesting drawing on the title-page.\u00a0 This quaint illustration in black ink shows a man in armor with a head of curly hair, clutching a small sword or dagger in his right hand and extending an unrolled scroll from his left.\u00a0 The artist has even included what seems to be chain mail below the armor on the figure\u2019s upper body.\u00a0 While the proportions are far from realistic and the left hand seems to be in an uncomfortably awkward position, this is a fascinating instance of a drawing that makes reference to the work that it accompanies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/01\/non-solus-post-2-010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-829\" title=\"Lilium grammatice inscription\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/01\/non-solus-post-2-010.jpg?w=239\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/01\/non-solus-post-2-010.jpg 687w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/01\/non-solus-post-2-010-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The text on the scroll is difficult to make out, but it seems to run thus: \u00a0\u201cEyn schirmer[?] by[n] ich gena[n]t, an dem Lilium grammatice mal[?] beka[n]t\u201d (roughly \u201cA swordsman am I called; in the Lilium grammatice [am I] well-versed\u201d).\u00a0 Although the word \u201cschirmer\u201d is only conjectured here, it would be in accordance with the presence of the sword.\u00a0 Judging by the spelling in these verses, the drawing must be contemporary or near-contemporary with the printed text.\u00a0 Perhaps it was drawn by a schoolboy seeking to alleviate his boredom during a lesson.\u00a0 Taking this even further, perhaps he or someone he knew (his instructor?) had the surname Schirmer or Schyrmer and this drawing is a visual pun.\u00a0 One can only guess, since the artist\u2019s identity may never be uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>Our copy is half-bound in modern vellum with decorative paper over paste-boards.\u00a0 It was acquired from Stonehill Books in 1950.<\/p>\n<p>We are seeking any additions or corrections to the text in the scroll or any thoughts about the illustration itself.\u00a0 If you have any suggestions please contact the Non Solus blog moderators or the Rare Book &amp; Manuscript Library. <strong>TB<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wilhelmus Zenders de Wert.
