She is often recognized for her time as Poet Laureate of Illinois (1968-2000) and Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress<br \/>\n(1985-1986), and for being the first Black person to win the Pulitzer Prize in any category (1950).<\/p>\n<p>While many materials in the Gwendolyn Brooks Collection (<a href=\"https:\/\/archon.library.illinois.edu\/rbml\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=1489&amp;q\">MS00086<\/a>) document her professional life, there are also many materials that offer a glimpse into her personal life\u2014including her time spent as a homemaker. One such treasure is her <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.library.illinois.edu\/items\/7fd98860-cbef-013b-46a1-02d0d7bfd6e4-e\">recipe box<\/a>, whose how-tos range from Never-Fail Pie Crust to a Cure for Hiccups. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl (\u201cdry ingredients\u201d) and set aside<br \/>\n2. In a large bowl, beat shortening, sugar, and vanilla extract until fluffy. Then, beat in eggs (\u201ccreamed mixture\u201d) and set aside<br \/>\n3. In a small bowl, add vinegar to milk (\u201cliquid\u201d) and stir<br \/>\n4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and liquid to creamed mixture. Beat well after each addition<br \/>\n5. <span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Pour half of the batter into one bowl. To the poured half, add baking chocolate and mix throughout. Leave the remaining half as is. (<em>Note: Ms. Brooks did her mixing in the pan instead<\/em>)<\/span><br \/>\n6. <span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Pour each bowl of batter into its own pan and spread evenly<\/span><br \/>\n7. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes<br \/>\n8. Cool the cakes. Cream butter 2. Add confectioners\u2019 sugar gradually, mixing after each addition 3.
