Charlotte (1816-1855), Emily (1818-1848), and Anne (1820-1849) were all accomplished poets and authors, best known for Charlotte\u2019s <em>Jane Eyre<\/em> (1847), Emily\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0<em>Wuthering Heights<\/em> (1847), and Anne\u2019s <em>The Tenant of Wildfell Hall <\/em>(1848). \u00a0The Bront\u00eb sisters were three of six siblings who grew up in the village of Haworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. They had two elder sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, both of whom died during childhood. They also had a brother, Patrick Branwell (1817-1848), who was an artist and architect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3534 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2018\/03\/Bronte_3-176x300.jpg\" alt=\"Title page for Shirley\" width=\"176\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2018\/03\/Bronte_3-176x300.jpg 176w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2018\/03\/Bronte_3-768x1312.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2018\/03\/Bronte_3-600x1024.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/>Charlotte was the eldest of the surviving Bront\u00eb siblings, and the Bront\u00eb who enjoyed the most success for her literary work. After publishing <em>Jane Eyre<\/em> under the pseudonym Currer Bell in 1847, Charlotte published two more novels, <em>Shirley<\/em> (1849) and <em>Villette<\/em> (1853), before marrying Arthur Bell Nicholls in 1854. Less than a year into her marriage, Charlotte died due\u00a0to complications from tuberculosis and hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness). Margaret served as the librarian at Connemara and helped edit many of her father\u2019s works. In a 1953 letter to Alfred Harcourt, Carl Sandburg wrote: \u201cMargaret has become widely read, a scholar who often surprises me with her erudition, knows the Bible and Shakespeare better than I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Bront\u00eb. <em>Shirley<\/em>.
