{"id":276,"date":"2011-07-13T02:15:37","date_gmt":"2011-07-13T07:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nonsolusblog.wordpress.com\/?p=276"},"modified":"2017-08-04T16:08:13","modified_gmt":"2017-08-04T16:08:13","slug":"unidentified-crest-of-a-blue-greyhound-in-an-incunable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/2011\/07\/13\/unidentified-crest-of-a-blue-greyhound-in-an-incunable\/","title":{"rendered":"Unidentified Crest of a Blue Greyhound in an Incunable (Incunabula Q. 871 A59c.I 1483)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2017\/08\/greyhoundbegin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2887\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2017\/08\/greyhoundbegin-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"greyhoundbegin\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2017\/08\/greyhoundbegin-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2017\/08\/greyhoundbegin.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2017\/08\/greyhoundbegin.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>St Augustine. <em>De civitate Dei.<\/em> Venice?: Antonio di Bartolommeo Miscomini, about 1476-1478.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While cataloging an Italian edition of St Augustine&#8217;s <em>De civitate Dei<\/em>, I was pleasantly surprised to come across a beautiful illumination.\u00a0 The table of contents makes up the first ten leaves of this volume, but the opening page of the text proper (leaf a1 recto) displays a stunning hand-painted border and initial &#8220;E&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 The border is made up of foliage, pink and blue flowers, and fruit, and is ornamented with black penwork and tiny dots of gold leaf.\u00a0 The two columns of text are divided by a foliate column, and the initial, which is set in a ground of gold leaf, continues this leafy motif.<\/p>\n<p>The most fascinating and mysterious element of this illumination lies at the foot of the page, where a circular wreath encloses an as-yet unidentified heraldic crest.\u00a0 Within this roundel\u2014surrounded by a pink, ornamental ground\u2014is a tear-shaped escutcheon argent with a greyhound rampant azure collared gules.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldsnet.org\/saitou\/parker\/index.htm\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nonsolusblog.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/100_1729-e1316719002325.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-410\" title=\"100_1729\" src=\"http:\/\/nonsolusblog.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/100_1729-e1316719002325.jpg?w=190\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A cursory investigation has turned up few clues as to whose crest this could be.\u00a0 A March 1887 catalog of the library of former Union General Rush C. Hawkins (1831-1920) lists a copy of Aquinas\u2019 <em>Summa contra gentiles<\/em> (Venice: Nicolas Jenson, 1480) and <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=dfwRAAAAIAAJ&amp;pg=PA228&amp;lpg=PA228&amp;dq=%22argent+a+greyhound+rampant+azure%22&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=RbgbmXtQSX&amp;sig=tezzicdJ2XIdfhJSS3OhG0MKNbs&amp;hl=la&amp;ei=f8AdToKvO4eKsQLU_9zPCA&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CBgQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&amp;q=%22argent%20a%20greyhound%20rampant%20azure%22&amp;f=false\">remarks that<\/a> \u201c[t]he recto of the fifth leaf has a large capital in blue and at the bottom of the same page, in colors, the arms of a former owner:&#8211; \u2018Argent a greyhound rampant azure\u2019\u201d.\u00a0 I have been unable to track this copy to its modern-day owner.\u00a0 Much of General Hawkins\u2019 large book collection, including his incunabula, is now held by Brown University as part of the Annmary Brown Memorial collection, set up in memory of Hawkins\u2019 wife after her death in 1906.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the copy of the 1480 Summa contra gentiles at Brown does not correspond to the one in the catalog.\u00a0 Both the Augustine and the Aquinas date from the same period and were possibly published in the same city.\u00a0 These two copies could very well have been in the possession of the same 15<sup>th<\/sup>-century owner who had them adorned with his arms.\u00a0 This is impossible to determine unless the whereabouts of the Hawkins copy become known.\u00a0 Perhaps there are more incunabula in institutions and private collections around the world with this same crest, waiting to be discovered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i-share-uiu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01CARLI_UIU\/gpjosq\/alma99654156612205899\">This volume<\/a> also has a manuscript note on the second front fly-leaf verso stating that this copy was \u201cBought at the Marquis of Hasting\u2019s sale for \u00a3. 10. 10. 0.\u201d\u00a0 This is presumably the sale of 1868, after the death of the 4<sup>th<\/sup> Marquess.\u00a0 It was acquired from Stonehill Books in 1949.<\/p>\n<p>It is bound in 18<sup>th<\/sup>-century light-brown calf with gilt tooled and stamped boards and spine, and has the spine title: \u201cS.
