{"id":239,"date":"2010-06-03T08:45:40","date_gmt":"2010-06-03T13:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nonsolusblog.wordpress.com\/?p=239"},"modified":"2010-06-03T08:45:40","modified_gmt":"2010-06-03T13:45:40","slug":"another-hans-christian-andersen-presentation-copy-839-83-an2eb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/2010\/06\/03\/another-hans-christian-andersen-presentation-copy-839-83-an2eb\/","title":{"rendered":"Hans Christian Andersen Presentation Copy from the Library of Carl Sandburg (839.83 An2Eb)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>While checking the recently-cataloged Hans Christian Andersen book inscribed to Mary Bruun against the special collections provenance file, a second book inscribed by Hans Christian Andersen was identified.\u00a0 This copy of The Sand-hills of Jutland has just as interesting a provenance as the last book.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as you open <a href=\"https:\/\/i-share.carli.illinois.edu\/uiu\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&amp;v1=1&amp;BBRecID=6215718\">the book<\/a>, a University of Illinois Library bookplate on the front paste-down announces that the book is from the library of Carl Sandburg (1878-1967), the famed Illinois poet whose library and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/sandburg.html\">papers<\/a> are held in our special collections.\u00a0 Sandburg was of Scandinavian descent and must have treasured this volume inscribed by Denmark\u2019s most famous author.\u00a0 Andersen himself was a champion of Scandinavism and in 1839 he wrote the poem <em>Jeg er en Skandinav<\/em> (I am a Scandinavian), which was set to music by the composer Otto Lindblad.<\/p>\n<p>The book is inscribed on the verso of the front free endpaper and reads: \u201cStatsraad Edvard Collin fra hans ven, Hans Christian Andersen\u201d (Councilor Edvard Collin from his friend, Hans Christian Andersen).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/picture007crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-557\" title=\"Picture007crop\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/picture007crop.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/picture007crop.jpg 1182w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/picture007crop-300x121.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/picture007crop-768x310.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/picture007crop-1024x413.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Andersen is well-known for having many unrequited loves.\u00a0 The Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind (1820-1887) was perhaps his most famous, but Andersen pursued many unsuccessful relationships with both women and men.\u00a0 Edvard Collin (1808-1886) was a close friend of Hans Christian Andersen and was one of the several men with whom Andersen pursued intimate relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Edvard Collin was the son of Jonas Collin (1776-1861), a director of the Royal Theatre and one of Andersen\u2019s early patrons who paid for his education, along with King Frederick VI.\u00a0 Andersen was also to romantically pursue Jonas Collin\u2019s daughter, Louise.\u00a0 The Collin family\u2019s close relationship to Andersen is further evidenced by the fact that Edvard Collin and his wife were originally buried at Andersen\u2019s grave site.<\/p>\n<p>T o learn more about Andersen\u2019s relationship with the Collin family, see Collin, Edvard. <a href=\"https:\/\/i-share.carli.illinois.edu\/uiu\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&amp;v1=1&amp;BBRecID=3663340\"><em>H.
