Tissandier was a prolific author of books on balloons and patented the method of application of the electric motor in balloon flight. His work followed that of Henri Giffard who invented the first engine-powered airship. Although Tissandier primarily wrote on ballooning (including a bibliography) he had many other interests and wrote books on meteorology, chemistry, engraving and photography.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3989-1thumb-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-602\" title=\"IMG_3989-1thumb\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3989-1thumb-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3989-1thumb-1.jpg 354w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3989-1thumb-1-300x131.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 354px) 100vw, 354px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\u00a0The library\u2019s copy (<a href=\"https:\/\/i-share.carli.illinois.edu\/uiu\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&amp;v1=1&amp;BBRecID=2060354\">Q.629.13322 T52h<\/a>) of this set has bookplates indicating that it\u00a0is from the library of Amelia Earhart and is accompanied by a note describing its acquisition:<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c\u2026The work was published in 1890 and was a part of the library of the late Amelia Earhart. Tissandier was greatly affected by the death of his comrades and wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/babel.hathitrust.org\/cgi\/pt?id=uc1.b4573236\"><em>Les Martyrs de la Science<\/em><\/a> in 1879.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3987-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-596\" title=\"IMG_3987-1\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3987-1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3987-1.jpg 3240w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3987-1-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3987-1-768x597.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/img_3987-1-1024x796.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0This book also mentions the use of hot-air balloons during the siege of Paris in 1870, over the course of which, according to Tissandier, 64 balloons crossed enemy lines carrying 91 passengers, 363 messenger pigeons and 5000 kilograms of mail. Pendant le Siege de Paris Souvenirs d&#8217;un Aeronaute<\/a> <\/em>(Paris: E.
