The Robert Zarbock collection of opera autographs [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/archon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=1494&amp;q=zarbock\">Post-1650 MS 0657<\/a>] is largely composed of letters written by opera singers famous on the Parisian stage in the late-19<sup>th<\/sup> and early-20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries. Also included are photographs, lithographs, and newspaper clippings, representing 47 opera personalities in total. The collection is open to researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Today we highlight three well-known performers: Emma Albani (Canadian soprano, 1847-1930), Emma Calv\u00e9 (French soprano, 1858-1942), and Emma Eames (American soprano, 1865-1952).<\/p>\n<p>Emma Albani performed on stages in Italy, Paris, New York, and London. Perhaps her most famous role was Isolde in Richard Wagner\u2019s <em>Tristan und Isolde<\/em> at London\u2019s Covent Garden in 1896, alongside Jean de Reszke (Tristan), who is also represented in the collection. Albani studied in Paris under Gilbert Duprez (also in the collection) in 1868, and performed on the Parisian stage with the Italian Opera during the 1872-1873 season. Zarbock Collection, Box 1 Folder 1.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Emma Calv\u00e9 is perhaps best remembered for her performance in the titular role of Georges Bizet\u2019s <em>Carmen <\/em>at the Op\u00e9ra-Comique in Paris in 1894. In 1922, Calv\u00e9 published an autobiography, available in English translation in the Main Library [<a href=\"https:\/\/i-share-uiu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01CARLI_UIU\/gpjosq\/alma99134234412205899\">780.923 C13<\/a>]. The Music and Performing Arts Library holds a collection of Calv\u00e9\u2018s known recordings [<a href=\"https:\/\/i-share-uiu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/permalink\/01CARLI_UIU\/gpjosq\/alma99386154312205899\">CDISC M1611C24 E46<\/a>].<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2045\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2045\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2045 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2015\/03\/2.gif\" alt=\"2\" width=\"500\" height=\"621\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2045\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emma Eames&#8217;s autograph on an undated letter addressed &#8220;Ch\u00e8re Madame.&#8221; Eames married painter Julian Story, and includes both her maiden and married names here. Zarbock Collection, Box 1, Folder 15.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>American Emma Eames spent the first several years of her career performing at Paris\u2019s Palais Garnier, where she debuted in 1889 as Juliette in Charles Gounod\u2019s <em>Rom\u00e9o et Juliette<\/em>. Eames also performed in New York (Metropolitan Opera), London (Royal Opera House and Covent Garden), and Monaco (Monte Carlo Opera), among other cities.
