{"id":196,"date":"2010-05-21T04:45:17","date_gmt":"2010-05-21T09:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nonsolusblog.wordpress.com\/?p=196"},"modified":"2010-05-21T04:45:17","modified_gmt":"2010-05-21T09:45:17","slug":"hans-christian-andersens-presentation-copy-to-a-young-neighbor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/2010\/05\/21\/hans-christian-andersens-presentation-copy-to-a-young-neighbor\/","title":{"rendered":"Hans Christian Andersen&#8217;s Presentation Copy to a Young Neighbor (IUA15161)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/coveradjusted.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-605\" title=\"CoverAdjusted\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/coveradjusted.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/coveradjusted.jpg 2996w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/coveradjusted-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/coveradjusted-768x454.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2011\/09\/coveradjusted-1024x606.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) gained international fame for his fairy tales.\u00a0 In fact, at the time of this blog posting, Edward Erikson&#8217;s famed statue of the Little Mermaid, which is permanently located in Copenhagen Harbor, is on display in Shanghai, China for EXPO 2010.\u00a0 It is timely that the Rare Book &amp; Manuscript Library has recently cataloged a copy of Andersen&#8217;s tales that he inscribed to a neighbor&#8217;s daughter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i-share.carli.illinois.edu\/uiu\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&amp;v1=1&amp;BBRecID=6126527\">IUA15161<\/a>, the library\u2019s copy of Andersen\u2019s <em>Femten eventyr og historier<\/em> (Fifteen Tales and Stories), is inscribed to Mary Bruun on the front wrapper.\u00a0 Mary Bruun was born in 1863 and was the daughter of Andersen\u2019s Odense neighbor, Georg Lassen Bruun.\u00a0 Andersen\u2019s young neighbor shows up several times in the bibliographical and biographical record of Hans Christian Andersen\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the library\u2019s copy, there is record of Andersen inscribing another book for Mary Bruun.\u00a0 In May 1866, he inscribed a copy of <em>Billedbog uden billeder<\/em> (<em>A Picture-book Without Pictures<\/em>, also known as <em>What the Moon Saw<\/em>) to her.\u00a0 His inscription, \u201cDen lille Mary Bruun, et Vesitkort fra H. C. Andersen,\u201d can be roughly translated as: \u201d[To] Little Mary Bruun, a visiting card from Hans Christian Andersen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary Bruun also appears in Andersen\u2019s diary at least once.\u00a0 In an entry for 3 January 1872, Andersen writes of seeing young Mary at the theatre, attending a show with her father for the first time: \u201dI\u00a0Theatret den lille Mary Bruun f\u00f8rste Gang, (hun var med\u00a0sin Fader min Nabo i A Portas Gaard); hun nikkede saa glad og lykkelig\u201d (Dagb\u00f8ger IX, p. 192-3).<\/p>\n<p>For more examples of Andersen\u2019s dedication copies see Arne and Mads Portman. <em>Omkring en Samling H. C. Andersen Dedikationer. <\/em>(K\u00f8benhavn: Victor Nielsen Tryk, 1967).
