{"id":185,"date":"2010-05-06T09:15:56","date_gmt":"2010-05-06T14:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nonsolusblog.wordpress.com\/?p=185"},"modified":"2010-05-06T09:15:56","modified_gmt":"2010-05-06T14:15:56","slug":"alexander-pope-presentation-copies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/rbx\/2010\/05\/06\/alexander-pope-presentation-copies\/","title":{"rendered":"Alexander Pope Presentation Copies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While cataloging the Nickell Collection of 18th-century English Literature, a presentation copy from Alexander Pope to William Oliver has been discovered.\u00a0 Alexander Pope (1688-1744) is best known for his poems, which include The Rape of the Lock (1712) and An Essay on Man (1733-4).\u00a0 But Pope was also a prolific letter writer due to a feeling of alienation that stemmed from his affliction with a form of tuberculosis which attacked his bones and left him severely hunchbacked and in chronic pain throughout his life.\u00a0 This presentation copy inscribed to his friend William Oliver, a two-volume collection of Pope&#8217;s letters, further emphasizes the privileged place of letters in Pope&#8217;s literary output.<\/p>\n<p>William Oliver (1695-1764) met Alexander Pope and Bishop William Warburton through Ralph Allen, a mutual friend.\u00a0 The friendship between Oliver and Pope is evidenced through the fact that Pope later designed a memorial for Oliver\u2019s parents and supplied the verse for it.\u00a0 William Oliver was a prominent Bath physician and inventor of the Bath Oliver, a biscuit which is still being made and consumed in Great Britain today.<\/p>\n<p>The two volumes of Pope\u2019s letters are a large paper issue bound in full calf.\u00a0 Volume I [<a href=\"https:\/\/i-share.carli.illinois.edu\/uiu\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&amp;v1=1&amp;BBRecID=6026209\">Q. Nickell B. P825p11737d<\/a>] bears the inscription: \u201cThe Gift of the Author as a Mark of the Friendship with which he is pleased to honour W: Oliver 1739\u201d. Volume II [<a href=\"https:\/\/i-share.carli.illinois.edu\/uiu\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&amp;v1=1&amp;BBRecID=6026809\">Q. Nickell B. P825p1w1741<\/a>] bears the inscription: \u201cEx dono amicipium Auctoris Gulielmo Oliveri\u201d and has Oliver\u2019s bookplate, done by J.
