The Real Thing Reading Group provides students, faculty, and community members with the opportunity to closely examine the manuscript or an interesting early edition of a book from our collections – not only to read a text together as a group but also to interact with the “real thing.”
Books are chosen based on the strengths of our collections and, during the monthly meetings, an alternating member of the group leads the examination and discussion of the literary work and related manuscript material or early editions of that work from our collections. Programming for each year always includes novels or stories by H.G. Wells and William Maxwell and has periodically included selections from the poetry of Carl Sandburg and Gwendolyn Brooks. Other past authors are Henry Green, Graham Greene, Ivy Compton-Burnett, Rhoda Broughton, Arnold Bennett, and Grant Richards.
