This means they can be reformatted and uploaded online for UIUC students and researchers to view without many constraints. Books are part of the public domain when their copyright expires, is forfeited, or if the item was created with no copyright license and thus was never intended to be protected under copyright law.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Preservation Reformatting offers the following services for public domain brittle materials:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Conservation treatments, including paper repairs, and mold remediation<\/li>\n<li>Re-housing for longevity of preservation<\/li>\n<li>In-house digitization by Internet Archive<\/li>\n<li>Outsourced vendor digitization<\/li>\n<li>Long-term preservation storage<\/li>\n<li>Online access on <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/university_of_illinois_urbana-champaign\">Internet Archive<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hathitrust.org\/\">HathiTrust<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/preservation-reformatting\/services\/patron-digitization-requests\/\">Patron digitization requests<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Copyright<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>The opposite of public domain, copyrighted materials are materials published after 1926.\u00a0 As a research institution, UIUC has unique rights to upload and share works under copyright with patrons for research purposes. Consult with Preservation Reformatting staff to discuss and determine project timeframes. To transfer brittle items to our office, deliver materials to room 425 in Main Library.
