About the Collections<\/h2>\n

The Special Collections at the Music and Performing Arts Library (MPAL) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign contain rare scores, books, recordings, pedagogical materials, and other materials used for scholarly inquiry and performance by students and faculty at the School of Music, the University of Illinois, and researchers throughout the world. Highlights of the collection include first edition books and scores from the 19th<\/sup> century, including a significant number of glees, songsters, and hymnals; almost 300 binder\u2019s volumes containing early printed music from England, Europe, and the US; an historic United States piano and vocal sheet music collection with over 92,000 items; original manuscripts; and 20th<\/sup> century music education kits. Notable collections are further described below.<\/p>\n

MPAL\u2019s Special Collections complement holdings at the\u00a0Sousa Archives and the Center for American Music<\/a> and the\u00a0Rare Book and Manuscript Library<\/a>. Materials are housed in the best location, i.e., published editions are generally held at MPAL\/Special Collections, manuscripts may be held at either MPAL, RBML, or SACAM, and archival papers and materials are held at the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music. This approach allows access to resources while providing appropriate stewardship of holdings, ensures preservation of valuable resources, encourages discovery of historical materials, and facilitates performance of unique musical works.<\/p>\n

Historic United States Sheet Music Collection<\/h3>\n

The Historic US Sheet Music Collection<\/a> holds popular music and art songs from the 19th and 20th centuries.<\/div><\/div>\n

Hymn Tune Index Sources<\/h3>\n

Hymn tunes<\/a> produced before 1820. This collection includes monographs, microfilms, photocopies, and other reproductions. It is housed jointly in MPAL Special Collections and the Rare Book and Manuscript Library.<\/div><\/div>\n

\"Notated<\/p>\n

Musicological Archives for Renaissance Manuscript Studies<\/h3>\n

This collection is meant to promote and forward the study of Renaissance music<\/a>. The Archives\u2019 collection of is now one of the most complete of its kind and includes microfilms of more than 1,600 manuscripts, anthologies, and prints from 1500-1600.<\/div><\/div>\n
