Theater programs and 78-rpm records incorporated into holdings stored on the lower level of the University Press Building; individual LP records and piano music may have been incorporated into the Music and Performing Arts Library’s cataloged holdings. Framed photograph of singers hangs in Music and Performing Arts Library seminar room.

Description

Including both donations, the Music and Performing Arts Library received over 1,350 78-rpm records, 82 LP discs, 38 libretti, 5 items of piano music, 2 Victor catalogs, about 500 playbills and concert programs, and a large composite photograph of Victor Records artists (ca. 1908), “The Great Singers of the World. ”

Arrangement

Incorporated into existing holdings or awaiting processing. Programs are arranged by city/name of theater; 78-rpm records are arranged by accession number (if indexed) or by manufacturer/serial number. Any recordings stored at the University Press Building have, as of 2019, been transferred to the Internet Archive for digitization.

Access/Finding aids/Bibliography

Victor catalogs (possibly including items received from Mickel) have been cataloged as individual items for the Music and Performing Arts Library’s Special Collections area.  Unfortunately, no list exists of the recordings donation or Victor catalogs.  The Collections File folder contains correspondence.

See Also

A small series at the Sousa Archives consists of programs and newspaper clippings documenting Mickel’s career as Speech Professor as a Theater director at Milikin University, and elsewhere. Also includes opera newspaper clippings and programs from Chicago and the Midwest during the 1920s and 1930s, some of which were given to Mickel from John Call.
