Getting Started

Thank you for your interest in collaborating with the Media Commons. Please request your library instruction at least two weeks prior to the desired date. Classes may be held in the Media Commons on the Upper Level of the Undergraduate Library, pending room availability, or in a remote classroom location.

General Information and Tours

Introduction to the Media Commons

Duration: 15 minutes

Location: Remote Classroom

COVERS: General information on Media Commons (website), Spaces, Video and Audio Production Studios, Self-Use Booths, VR Spaces, Loanable Technology, Classroom Instruction, Workshops and Consultations

Physical Media Commons Tour

Duration: 20-30 minutes w/questions

Location: Media Commons/Room 289 or 291

COVERS: Physical walkabout to: Video Production Studio, Audio Recording Studio, Self-Use Audio Booth, Self-Use Video Booth, Relaxation Rooms (2), Virtual Reality (VR) Rooms (2), Game Station, Media Editing Lab, Loanable Technology Desk.

Media Production

Creating Quality Videos: Media Best Practices and Resources

Duration: 50-80 minutes

Location: Remote Classroom or in Media Commons/Room 289 or 291

COVERS: Overview on how to create a media project from A-Z. Includes writing scripts, recording video in the studio/in the field, recording audio in the studio/in the field, editing and delivery of a final video. Focuses on the resources specifically available through the Media Commons, Loanable Technology, and Illinois Media Space.

Pre-Production/Media Project Development

Duration: 50-80 minutes

Location: Remote Classroom or in Media Commons/Room 289 or 291

COVERS: First steps of bringing your media concept to the screen. Screenwriting and Producing basics will be discussed.

Media Production

Duration: 50-80 minutes

Location: Remote Classroom or in Media Commons/Room 289 or 291

COVERS: All aspects of putting a media project together. These steps include video and audio recording in the studio or in the field, and the principles behind cinematography, lighting and sound design.

Post Production

Duration: 50-80 minutes

Location: Remote Classroom or in Media Commons/Room 289 or 291

COVERS: All of the steps needed to finish and deliver your media project. This includes editing, color correction, audio mixing, and discussing the delivery formats for your short video. We will also discuss the importance of making your media accessible to people with disabilities (creating captions).

Screenwriting

Duration: 50-80 minutes

Location: Remote Classroom or in Media Commons/Room 289 or 291

COVERS: Idea to concept phase. An overview on how to create loglines, synopses, treatments and beat sheets. This training also discusses outlining your media project, the traditional screenplay format, and provides tips on how to write a strong, visual script.

ePortfolio Creation and Workflow Training using Adobe Premiere Pro

50-80 minutes

Location: Remote Classroom or in Media Commons/Room 289 or 291

COVERS: Portfolio and Demo Reel creation, and general media creation workflow topics.

Emerging Technology Special Topics

Introduction to Virtual Reality (VR)

20-50 minutes

Location: Remote Classroom or in Media Commons VR Space(s)

COVERS: An introduction to the concepts and technology behind Virtual Reality. Participants
will use VR headsets to view and interact with 360° videos.
