Task Force on User Education

The Task Force on User Education is requesting copies of all information sheets, URLS of help documents, or any information regarding online resources presently being used in library units. We are trying to create a central resource for this information. This would enable anyone planning a session on user education to draw on the expertise of all the library staff and would hopefully prevent duplication of effort.

Please send one copy of any printed material to Helen Sullivan in the Slavic and East European Library, Room 225. URLs can be sent via email to hfsulliv@uiuc.edu

Thank you.

ILCSO Public Services Forum

I have just received notification from ILCSO that registration for the ILCSO Public Services Forum has begun. The Forum will be held on Thursday, December 11 from 10:00 to 3:00 in the Beckman Institute Auditorium here in Urbana. Registration deadline will be Monday, December 8, 1997. Please register, if you plan to attend, through the ILCSO web page which also has
a copy of the agenda. URL is http://ilcso.aiss.uiuc.edu/Web/Forums/Register.html. Upon registering
where it asks about payment please click on the "will send payment" option, but do not send your own money. We will be sending one big check for all the registrants. Please note that we will pay the registration fee only. If you wish to buy a box lunch from ILCSO please bring your own lunch money to the forum.

If a Unit Head decides their GA needs to attend and have their registration paid for by the library, the GA will also register via the web. The GA’s supervisor should inform Jodi Bialeschki of the Library Systems Office that they have authorized attendance for their GA. GA paid attendance is a
pilot authorized by Frances O’Brien for this semester. If this works well we will consider continuing this practice.

If you have any questions please e-mail Jodi at jbialesc@uiuc.edu.

Minutes of the Electronic Resources Subcommittee meeting 10/9/97

Present: P. Watson, L. German, M. Williams, K. Kluegel, D. Burgard, K. Wei, T. Cole, P. Turnbull, B. Swann, G. Youngen (scribe)

Printing: P. Watson summarized the discussion on fee-based printing from the most recent Admin. Council meeting. The plan for 3-4 "cluster sites" of fee-based public printers around campus was described. The committee members were asked to get feedback from their divisions on the idea of putting printers in high volume sites only (UGL, Grainger, etc).

Committee discussion focused on the technical feasibility of the cluster concept, Printing Services role in the operation, and problems for the smaller (remote) libraries. K. Kluegel mentioned that remote printing sites would result in a decrease in the level of customer service.

Feedback from the divisions in the form of position statements to R. Wedgeworth with suggestions for alternatives (if any) are encouraged.

Electronic Journals: P. Watson started the discussion by summarizing the various plans and services offered by the commercial publishers, professional societies, and ejournal aggregators.

The committee discussed some of the problems of dealing with the myriad publishers agreements, contracts, delivery mechanisms, and content. It was agreed the committee needs to develop a plan to aid the decision making process on the selection of electronic journal subscriptions, as well as promoting the availability of ejournals on campus.

The discussion will be continued at the next meeting, Oct. 23.
