VISITING ILLINOIS NEWSPAPER PROJECT CATALOGER
and
VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LIBRARY ADMINISTRATION

Position:  Available August 21, 1999.  A full-time temporary appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor of Library Administration.  Annual contract renewable by mutual consent of the incumbent and the University Library and continued availability of N.E.H. funding.

Duties & Responsibilities:  Under the direction of the Project's Senior Cataloger, responsible for visiting field sites in Illinois, for inventorying and evaluating newspaper collections; for gathering necessary bibliographic and holdings information for newspapers; for determining unique Illinois newspaper issues in need of preservation microfilming.  Extended travel within Illinois is required. Primary responsibilities will include the following:

1. Visiting field sites around Illinois.

2. Evaluating and inventorying newspaper collections at field sites.

3. Gathering appropriate bibliographic and holdings information for cataloging and union listing on OCLC.

4. Determining unique Illinois newspaper issues in need of preservation microfilming.

5. Searching INP local database for titles and holdings.

6. Searching OCLC when available and necessary, for titles and holdings.

7. Developing and maintaining cooperative relationships with colleagues and librarians at field sites.

8. Performing original and copy cataloging of newspapers, according to AACR2rev. and the Newspaper Cataloging and Union Listing Manual.

9. Creating holdings records in the OCLC database for all Illinois newspaper holdings located in the course of the project.

10. Assuming other duties and responsibilities as required.

The Project:  The Illinois Newspaper Project (INP) is part of the United States Newspaper Program, a national effort to preserve and catalog newspapers from the United States.  This phase of the Project will concentrate on inventorying and cataloging the newspaper collections in the Illinois counties of McLean and Champaign, excluding the UIUC Library.  INP is funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities grant continuing through April 2001.

Qualifications Required:  Master's degree (MLS) from an ALA-accredited library school at time of appointment.  Familiarity with AACR2rev. and LCSH; ability to communicate clearly in writing and orally; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and librarians at field sites; demonstrated ability to analyze collections and meet production goals within a specific time period; willingness and ability to drive and travel extensively within Illinois. Preferred Working knowledge of Access database software, OCLC, HTML, Windows applications and MS Office.

Salary and Rank:  The University Library's minimum salary for appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor is $33,000.

Terms of Appointment:  Twelve month appointment.  Twenty-four days vacation per year, 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative) plus additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System, which includes several private options, is compulsory upon appointment (8% of staff member's salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination); newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.

Campus & Community:  Urbana-Champaign, located about 135 miles south of Chicago, is a university community of over 100,000 inhabitants, plus a student population of over 35,000.  The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has an administrative, academic and support staff of over 12,000.  Many of the academic units of the university are recognized for national leadership in instruction and research.  The Library ranks first in size among state university libraries and third among all universities in the country.

Visiting Assistant Librarian for Reference and User Education

Duties:  Reporting to the Head of Reference, the Visiting Assistant Reference and User Education Librarian is responsible for providing dynamic reference and instructional services to the students and faculty of UIUC.  Specific responsibilities include:   providing onsite and remote reference service; coordinating course-related and resource-based library instruction within the Reference Library; participating in the development and maintenance of the instructional component of the Reference Library's webpage; playing an active role in library-wide instructional initiatives; and working closely with other campus units involved with the innovative application of educational technologies.

Department:  As part of a decentralized campus library system, Central Reference Services provides information services to the campus community of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as to individuals from outside the university who require resources unique to the UIUC Library.  The staff of 6.75 FTE librarians, 2 paraprofessionals, and 3.25 FTE graduate assistants offer a tiered service, with service points for ready reference and for research consultation.  The extensive print reference collection is complemented by numerous digital resources.  The Reference Library provides formal and informal instruction in research strategies and in the use of library resources through course-related instruction and web-based research guides.   The reference staff is strongly committed to the application of new information technologies to enhance learning and research.  For more information, see the Reference website at
