The Library Colloquium Committee Presents:

"Which guardians, whose culture?
Feminist thinking, libraries and information"

a talk by

Sarah M. Pritchard

Sarah M. Pritchard, Director of Libraries at Smith College, will take a look at how the women's movement and the development of women's studies in the 1970's led to an outpouring of new ways to look at historical and literary evidence, archival documentation and public information services and at how that, in turn, led to the burgeoning of feminist thinking in librarianship.

Minutes from the February 16, 1999 Meeting

1. Announcements:   Betsy Kruger is returning to the Preservation Committee after her DRA related absence.  Many thanks to Susan Hill for filling in for Betsy in her absence. Susan will continue to work on the Digital Preservation Subcommittee and on the MARC 583 project.

2. Minutes from the last meeting were approved.  David Griffiths will submit to LON.

3. David Griffiths discussed the report of the Digital Preservation Subcommittee "Preservation of Access to Tangible digital Publications at the UIUC Library."   David received very valuable input from Beth Sandore on the report and will also solicit input on hardware obsolescence issues and others from Tim Cole.  Sharon will consult with Karen Schmidt regarding whether or not the report should go to CDC before it is forwarded to Administrative Council. Once input is complete, the report revised, and the CDC question is answered, Sharon will write a cover memo and forward the report to Administrative Council.

4. Old Business:   The memo which Sharon Clark wrote to the Executive Committee suggesting that the CDC Chair be appointed as an ex-officio member of the Preservation Committee will probably be taken up at the next EC meeting.

5. New Business:   Betsy Kruger is checking into how/by whom the temperature and humidity reports collected in the Stacks should be monitored now that Bill Henderson has retired as Preservation Librarian.  Sharon remarked that Chapter 9 of the Preservation Handbook (on reformatting and special materials) may soon need to be revised by the committee.

Sharon discussed her recent attendance at a NDC filming/scanning workshop.

Finally, Bill Maher discussed his involvement in an Illinois state historical records initiative.  There was also a brief discussion of preservation education for UIUC library staff.

The next meeting is March 9, 10:00-11:00, room TBA.

Betsy Kruger

Minutes for the 2/22/99 EC Meeting

Present:  Tina Chrzastowski, Tim Cole, Marty Friedman, Barbara Jones, Tom Kilton, Bill Maher, Karen Schmidt, Mitzi Williams

Absent:  Frances O'Brien, Bob Wedgeworth

Maher chaired the meeting in Wedgeworth's absence.

I. Minutes of February 8th EC meeting were approved as submitted.

II. Information Reports

A. Karen Schmidt reported on recent Campus Library Policy Committee meeting with Campus Budget Oversight Committee.

III. Old Business

A. Proposal to transfer Preservation Committee Charge to CDC (i.e., to make Preservation Committee a sub-committee of CDC)

The EC effectively had given approval for this specific change July 20, 1998 as part of overall reorganization of CDC approved on that date. The EC discussed the February 5th memo from Preservation Committee Chair Sharon Clark asking that EC not implement this specific part of the CDC reorganization.  Several issues were discussed, including the amount of time required to liaison between committees if they continued to exist as separate entities; whether the size of a Preservation subcommittee of CDC might be smaller than current independent Preservation Committee (and whether that smaller committee could be at least as effective); whether emphasis on preservation activity outlined in Strategic Plan (developed after July 20) was reason to maintain independent Preservation Committee; and whether reconfiguration as a sub-committee of CDC would diminish effectiveness of the committee.  Maher conveyed his sense that current Preservation Committee felt any action to restructure the group as subcommittee of CDC was premature in light of ongoing Preservation Task Force work.  Friedman suggested that as long as CDC chair was ex officio member of Preservation Committee, CDC was probably enough involved in preservation planning.

At the end of this discussion, Friedman moved that EC inform Clark that for the interim the Preservation Committee should continue functioning as it has been functioning, including with consultation to/from the Collection Development Committee. Reconsideration of the Committee's status should be deferred until after EC has had a chance to review the report of the current Preservation Task Force and find out more about the prospects for appointment of a preservation administrator.  In any event EC will re-visit this matter before start of next academic year.

Schmidt seconded the motion and it was approved by the EC.  Maher accepted action to inform Clark of outcome.

B. Recommendations for membership on 3 faculty search committees

The EC discussed membership for search committees for Head, Library and Information Science Library, Head, Communications Library, and Head, Government Documents Library. A preliminary list of names was developed for each committee. Maher took an action to revise and complete list after discussing with appropriate division coordinators. This revised lists will be circulated via e-mail to EC members for comment and then formally submitted to Wedgeworth.

IV. New Business

A. ISICC Proposal to Dissolve PAC Implementation Team & Re-assign Residual Responsibilities to Gateway Advisory Committee.

The EC discussed February 19th memo from ISICC chair Peggy Steele asking EC to approve dissolving PAC Implementation Team and re-assignment of residual responsibilities to Gateway Advisory Committee. Williams raised some concern about whether this change might slow down implementation of changes in PAC and Library web pages that point to PAC. Cole argued that responsiveness in this area right now is mostly determined by responsiveness of Library Systems Office and ILCSO/AISS rather than by committees involved.  After further discussion, the EC tentatively approved dissolution of the PAC Implementation Team, subject to final review of modified Gateway Advisory Committee charge.  Cole took action to inform chairs of ISICC, PAC, and Gateway of this change, and to ask Gateway Committee chair for revised committee charge.

B. Proposal to Recognize Alex Scheeline & SCL for Work Done

In response to a suggestion from Jo Kibbee, EC decided to send a letter to Alex Scheeline recognizing outstanding work done by him and SCL on behalf of the Library over the course of the last 6 months.  Chrzastowski accepted action to draft this letter and circulate to rest of EC for comment and review. Letter will be sent on behalf of the EC by vice-chair Bill Maher.

Respectfully submitted,

Tim Cole
Secretary, Library Executive Committee
