Sarah M. Pritchard, Director of Libraries--Smith College, will take a
look at how the women's movement and the development of women's studies in the 1970's led to an outpouring of new ways to look at historical and literary evidence, archival documentation and public information services, and at how that in turn led to the burgeoning of feminist thinking in librarianship.

User Education Task Force
January 25, 1999
Minutes

Present Searing, Rudasill, Dubois, Quinn, Anderson, Scarborough, Shonkwiler, Sandore

Action list was reviewed.

ALA
Sue Searing brought up the question of attendance at User Education events at ALA. It was agreed that those attending the events would report at the next meeting.

Reserves in DRA
The impact of Reserve Room function in DRA on User Education was discussed. Concerns were expressed regarding how much use was being made of this function, and various problems with the system. Marlys Scarborough and Lori Dubois will look into the feasibility of an handout or message concerning Reserves.

Graduate Student Support
A number of suggestions were made for tasks a graduate student could perform for the committee. Assistance with Workshops, including registration and follow-up, was suggested. Providing assistance on the CDROM list project and assisting the Web Instruction Group were also suggested.

Director of Library Systems
Beth Sandore is the Chair of the Search Committee. She brought the Task Force up to date on the search, indicating there would be four candidate interviews, from Feb.8-18, which would include public presentations by the candidates. Sue Searing indicated that candidates would meet with all system-related committees and solicited feedback from the committee on questions that might be put to the candidates. Suggestions included candidate opinion of the position/role of systems office in user education, role of education technologies in User Ed, etc.  Members of the Task Force should email Sue with other questions and concerns.

Computing.uiuc.edu
Lori Dubois indicated that the "how to" section of the"computing.uiuc.edu" online manual is complete. She will send it to CCSO for loading.

Site Map for User Ed. Website
Lori Dubois indicated work is continuing by the WIG committee on the site map for User Ed website. The importance of providing access to staff items on the site was expressed.

Handouts
Update on Expert searching handout was delayed.  January update on DRA is now on the Web. Searching and requesting journals handout is now up on the web.

Fee based Laser Printing
Sue Searing showed the Draft handout on fee based laser printing which Paula Watson prepared. Sue is also preparing a press release on this.

Minutes of the Library Staff Steering Committee Meeting
February 10, 1999

Present: A. Bendell, A. Conrad, J. Gammon, H. Kim, P. Lindell, L. Roberts, B. Trumpinski-Roberts, D. Walter, G. Witte

Guest: Vera Mitchell

1. Minutes of the Jan. 27 meeting were approved as revised.

2. Reports were presented on the following

A. Administrative Council

B. Faculty Meeting

C. Director of Library Systems Office - status of interviews were announced.

D. Library Space Reconfiguration Committee - there is nothing new to report. However, they have regular meetings scheduled and will begin to make important decisions on locations of departments.

3. Old Business

A. A. Conrad will contact P. Watson about Continuing Education & Staff Development classes for staff (including computer skills).

B. Hygrometer data from the Bookstacks is being collected for analysis.

C. We sent messages to B. Clark concerning updates about the emergency Library exits, the south bus shelter, parking lot lighting, and the staffing survey.

4. We discussed the ALA scholarship - each candidate should submit a letter of interest to Diana Walter, Geology Library, by March 1, 1999. The winner will be announced by March 3 to permit prompt registration for the lowest prices of the Conference.

5. The members approved a thank-you note to be sent to former Chair, Julie Watkins.

New Business:

6. The Supervisory Training Session schedule from F. O'Brien was distributed by P. Lindell. All training workshops are morning sessions.

7. Guest Vera Mitchell, staff representative to the University Librarian Search Committee, presented an update of the Committee's work. Vera encouraged staff to attend the candidates' interviews(presentations) when scheduled on campus.
