1. Minutes of the Nov. 11 Meeting were approved.

2. Meeting reports were given:

A. Reconfiguration: The Space Committee has received letters from faculty and staff voicing their concerns about changes. These letters are on file with the committee.

B. Administrative Policy Meeting:

1. Staff should not request social security numbers from patrons.

2. Problems with anonymous e-mail are being investigated by division heads.

3. A draft of the new Library budget was discussed. Questions arose about the status of the staff survey, and where new staff positions would be located, etc. Bart Clark will be invited to our Jan. 13 meeting, so he can answer questions.

4. J. Watkins mentioned that Dec. 18 is the deadline for receiving ballots for the election for LSSC members. Ballots will be counted and the results announced before the holidays.

Jan. 13, 1999 is the next meeting date for LSSC. That double meeting will be attended by newly elected members along with standing members.

Minutes of the Library Staff Steering Committee Meeting
Jan. 13, 1999

Present: A. Bendel, J. Carrico, A. Conrad, J. Gammon, H. J. Kim, P. Lindell, J. Watkins, G. Witte

Guest: B. Clark

1. Introduction of new members and continuing committee members.

2. We reviewed spring responsibilities of committee to ALA Scholarship.

3. LSSC has a web site:
charge of the Committee -
http//www.library.uiuc.edu/committe/charges/staffcom.htm

bylaws of the Committee -
http//www.library.uiuc.edu/committe/bylaws/steer.htm

4. P. Lindell inquired about classes in computer skills for staff.

5. Concern was raised about the cataloging backlog.

6. We reviewed questions for Bart Clark before he arrived at the meeting. He was invited to update us about the following

A. Staff survey - investigating two models for optimal numbers and distribution of staff. A report will be available in the Library Science Library in February.

B. The new budget plan is to allow for changes and upgrades of positions. A revised budget will be available Jan. 19.

C. The need to update the directory wall cases on the first floor was brought to Bart's attention.

D. He will investigate the possibility of having an MTD bus shelter at the north side of Gregory Drive near the Library entrance.

E. Panic doors or exits, per safety codes, is another matter Bart will check on.

F. Parking lot lighting problem several lights have been out recently, resulting in a low level of lighting, which is unsafe. Too many lights go out before the problem is corrected.

B. Clark concluded that faster service is needed. He stated also that additional lights on the building by the west/parking lot door would improve the situation. He informed us that the lighting in the parking lot meets code when all lights are functioning (depending upon atmospheric conditions).

G. Confusion on closing the Library during inclement weather was discussed. Bob Wedgeworth will bring this matter before the meeting of the Deans.

7. We thanked Julie Watkins for her responsible service as Chair of the LSSC for the past several years.

8. Since we were out of time, election of new officers and the reading/approval of the minutes of the last meeting were tabled until the next meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Jane Gammon
Secretary
