Library Staff Steering Committee Meeting Minutes
May 23, 2001

Present:  A. Conrad, L. Engels, R. Jahr, H. J. Kim, P. Lindell, T. McCoy, S. McFarland, E. Schroeder, G. Witte, R. Wright (for J. Somera)

I.  Minutes of the May 9, 2001, Meeting were Revised and Approved

II.  Reports

A.  Admin. Council -- No meeting since last report.

B.  Faculty meeting -- (minutes posted June 4).

Overview of Systems Office:  Bob Burger and John Weible

-- Opening two library-technology positions:  AUL for Information Technology (faculty position) and Library Systems Office Manager (academic professional position)

-- System office work division, three areas:

-- Workstation support (900 staff and 200 public)
-- Infrastructure and applications support (network management gateway servers)
-- Library management services (ILCSO DRA III acquisitions and serials control)

-- Training and consulting:  Room for expansion in regard to staff training, do not want to duplicate other campus opportunities; possibly group classes, one-on-one instruction not cost effective

Real-time Reference Service Pilot Project -- Jo Kibbee

-- Offered by Reference and Undergrad February 15-May 15

-- Patrons directed to service by links on the web pages.

-- 600 questions answered (83% UIUC affiliated-- majority of questions on library collections and services)

-- Positive feedback (hope to extend service in the future)

UI Integrate:

-- New campus admnistrative services system (three modules:  human resources, finances,  and student services--library will contribute staff time

III.  Updates/Discussions

A.  Election Guidelines Sub-committee -- Final draft distributed to the Committee for comments/corrections.

B.  May 14 Library Retreat -- Reviewed input received regarding the retreat.   Gil will present comments to the SPC Retreat Planning group at the wrap-up session.

C.  Oak Street Remote Facility -- Still waiting on word about the power lines.   The Selection group has reports coming from AITS.  They will be posted on a web site for selectors to begin reviewing for the best candidates for the first wave of relocations.  The Processing group will have its first official meeting soon.

D.  Morale Document -- Will continue at next meeting.  For staff wishing to review the document, the web address is http//www.library.uiuc.edu/administration/news.htm

IV.  New Business

A.  Began discussion regarding the CSE retreat for the fall.  Date, location, and format have yet to be decided.  If staff have suggestions, forward them to your division rep.

B.  Reminder about the upcoming interviews with the candidates for the position of Assistant to the Head of the Library's HR Office.
