Library Staff Steering Committee Meeting Minutes
April 25, 2001

I.  Minutes of the April 11, 2001, meeting were revised and approved.

II.  Reports

A.  Admin. Council -- Meeting was canceled.

B.  Faculty Meeting -- Meeting was canceled.

III.  Updates/Discussions

A.  Election Guidelines Sub-committee - finalized date guides.

Final drafting will be reviewed after the May 14th retreat.

B.  May 14th Library Retreat -- Remind staff about the retreat and encourage their attendance.

C.  Oak Street Remote Facility -- The Committee is still meeting with divisions and identifying the 'nooks & crannies' materials.

D.  Morale Document -- Reviewed another section.  Will continue at next meeting.  For staff wishing to review the document, the web address is:   http//www.library.uiuc.edu/administration/news.htm

 

IV.  New Business

A.  Training -- Cindy Kelly will be invited to the next meeting to discuss training for staff.

B.  There was a brief discussion about non-Library people using the staff lounges as study space.

Assistant Architecture and Art Librarian
University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign

Position Available:

August 21, 2001. A full time tenure track position as Assistant Professor of Library Administration.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the administrative direction of the Architecture and Art Librarian, the incumbent is responsible for developing, promoting, and providing user education programs to undergraduate and graduate students.  This Assistant Librarian provides individual and group instruction; creates web-based tutorials on the use of library resources and information technologies; provides reference assistance and bibliographic instruction in the fields of architecture and art.  The Assistant Librarian is also responsible for collection development and faculty liaison in the field of Asian art and architecture published in Western European languages.  The Assistant Librarian will also be required to complete the cataloguing of a small backlog of approximately two hundred items.  Knowledge of current principles and methods of cataloging tools including AACR2r and US-MARC formats.  Librarians have faculty rank and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for tenure and promotion.

The Library consists of more than 40 departmental libraries that are located throughout campus and administratively organized into eight divisions.  The Architecture and Art Library (Ricker Library) reports through the Arts and Humanities Division Coordinator to the University Librarian.  The Architecture and Art Library is one of forty-two departmental libraries in the University Library system, and is located in the School of Architecture building.

Qualifications:

Required:  Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school  or its equivalent; B.A. in art history or fine arts; two or more years of professional experience in library instruction and reference services in an academic library; knowledge of traditional and electronic reference services and sources in the fields of architecture and art; high level of computer literacy; familiarity with web technology for designing instruction including HTML; effective oral and written communication skills; strong commitment to excellence in services; excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and teaching faculty.

Preferred:  Working knowledge of one or more Western European languages; course work or experience in performing original cataloguing.

Salary and Rank:

Salary is competitive and is commensurate with experience and credentials.  This is a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Library Administration.

Terms of Appointment:

Twelve month appointment; 24 work days vacation per year, 11 paid holidays, 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative) plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System, which includes several private options, is compulsory (8% of staff member’s salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination); newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.
