Collection Development Committee Meeting Minutes
October 24, 2000

Present:  Mary Beth Allen, Alvan Bregman, Sharon Clark, Lisa German, Dick Griscom, Deloris Holiman, John Hoffmann, Larry Miller, Lynne Rudasill, Karen Schmidt, Mary Stuart, David Ward,  Lynn Wiley, Jane Williams, Greg Youngen

Absent:  Paula Watson

Library Allocation Steering Committee Hearings and Feedback:  Karen reported on the latest LASC hearings.  Turnout has been sporadic.  Many comments made at the hearings do not address allocation methods, but are still informative.  There have been questions raised about the work of the LASC Modeling Subcommittee, especially with regard to the e-mail questions from Diego Klabjan and his graduate student.  Diego is interested in the size and cost of literature and how we select and order h\our materials.   Many of us are concerned that he understand our bibliographic work more thoroughly.   Karen will investigate getting more information on their work for us.

CRL Report, Status Update:

Mary Stuart presented preliminary findings on the work of the CRL Task Force.  Survey responses have not been thoroughly analyzed, but there are general results to report. I t was reported that we generally have some familiarity with CRL’s programs and services, but it is limited.  Most people knew about the foreign dissertations.   CRL does actively collect foreign dissertations, and has holdings of 750,000 foreign dissertations, none of which are represented in their catalog.  Many of us did not know that we can borrow materials for up to a year unless there is a recall on it, and that patrons at member institutions get free photocopying.  A few people knew about the demand purchase program but the parameters of this program:  CRL will spend up to $2,000 per patron at member institutions, in response to inquires for certain types of materials in four categories.  There is also the shared purchase proposal program that most people are aware of in a general way.  There is a lot of interest in loading the CRL tapes into the online catalog as a way of increasing our use of the CRL collections.  Lynn Wiley discussed connecting to CRL through the VEL.

The survey also highlighted the lack of interest on our part in deaccessioning serials that CRL is committed to archiving.  CRL announced last spring that they would archive the serials found in JSTOR, for example.  Some suggestions were made about providing more education about CRL services, and making membership in CRL more central to our collections work.

Sharon Clark discussed the CRL ICON project that will work on microfilming member institutions’ unique newspapers.   This is a very labor intensive and expensive enterprise.

A new president for CRL will likely be announced by January.

Document Delivery (Wiley):

Lynn Wiley discussed changes in document delivery to make the service increasingly responsive. She is looking closely at Inside Web requests and is in the process of updating the frequently-requested titles list.  Karen asked to have that report for budget planning.  IRRC is adding on to off-campus delivery services to better serve our distance education students.

Distribution of One-Time Money:

The Budget Subcommittee has completed its work on the distribution of the one-time money to the subject funds.  Changes should appear on fund print-outs shortly.

Additional Interdisciplinary Funds:

EIRC has asked that requests for electronic products made against the $30,000 in new interdisciplinary funds also be shared with that committee for review.  Requests for new interdisciplinary titles are due to Karen on December 15.

E-Resources Strategic Plan:  The Electronic Strategic Plan is almost completed and is a very thorough document.  Procedural issues related to electronic resources will be addressed in the EIRC in the coming months.
