News from the Alpha Chapter of Beta Phi Mu

National News:  Beta Phi Mu has announced a special Millennial Membership Initiation program under which any person who has been invited to join BPM during the period 1947-2001, and did not do so, may be initiated during the period 2000-2001.

Any individual who wishes to accept this special invitation should contact the chapter which initially invited them to join and ask that chapter to send

verification to the headquarters that the person was invited to join or, if those records are no longer available, to at least verify that the person earned the requisite 3.75 GPA.  Upon receipt of this information and the person's name and address, the national office will issue an invitation to join, process the new member's application, and notify the chapter.  GSLIS graduates should contact William T. Henderson at GSLIS, 501 East Daniel Street, Champaign, IL  61820, or willt@alexia.lis.uiuc.edu.

Executive Committee Meeting Minutes
June 15, 2000

Present:  Paula Kaufman (chair), Tim Cole, Bill Maher, Mary Stuart, Leslie Troutman, Mitzi Williams

Absent:  Margaret Chaplan, Tina Chrzastowski, Marty Friedman

I.  Approval of Past Meeting Minutes

The minutes of the May 22, 2000, meeting and the Special Budget Meeting of June 5, 2000, were approved.

II.  New Business

Government Documents Positions:  A letter from Mary Mallory about staffing in Government Documents Library was addressed.  There are two positions that need to be filled; they are not new positions.  Following much discussion, it was decided that one search committee be formed to fill both positions.  Paula will contact those recommended to serve on the committee.

A letter concerning the User Education Committee was received from Sue Searing, suggesting that the committee size be reduced.  It was decided that the committee be comprised of five members from public service units (without specifying divisional affiliation), plus the Undergraduate Library and Reference Library instruction librarians, the Academic Outreach Librarian, and the AUL for Services (ex officio).

EEOC Appointments:  EEOC and Affirmative action positions in the library were discussed. EECO committee members were proposed.  Maher asked if the size of the committee (five) is determined by the campus.  If not, a committee of three might be sufficient.

Multi-cultural Studies Librarian:  The position has been formally approved by the campus. A search committee was suggested.  Paula will contact those recommended to serve on the search committee.

II.  Old Business

Mary Stuart presented draft guidelines for nonreappointment of assistant professors in years 2-5 of the probationary period.  She noted that the Faculty Advisory Committee has urged the Provost to change Communication No. 10 (Guidelines for nonreappointment), so that appeals of the nonreappointment are considered by a committee comprised of persons who did not participate in the original decision not to reappoint.  She proposed a modification to the earlier draft (which was distributed to EC in May, but never discussed) to conform to this principle.

The suggested revision was accepted.  Stuart will prepare a revised draft of the guidelines for review at the next EC meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.

- more social events,
- visits to other departments,
- q and a session in Rm 66 with Paula Kaufman and Cindy Kelly
- staff retreat to discuss issues
- improve communication

B.  Bob Burger discussed class training needing to continue this fall and later.   Paula Kaufman approved monies for classes to continue.  Bob suggested that in the future a staff member could teach the introductory course with the same materials used by CCSO to reduce expense.  Bob will request that Paula K. send a message that work release time is approved for those attending the class.

Respectfully submitted,

Jane Gammon
