(Paula Kaufman) Downs Intellectual Freedom Award Reception All are invited to attend the reception at ALA Midwinter in San Antonio on January 15, 2000. The reception will be held at The Holiday Inn Crockett Hotel (behind the Alamo and just around the corner from the Menger Hotel) in San Antonio on Saturday, January 15, 5:30-7:30 p.m., just off the main lobby. The reception is co-hosted by GSLIS and Greenwood Publishing Group, located in Westport, CT. |
Greenwood also provides an honorarium to the award recipient. The GSLIS faculty has awarded the Downs Intellectual Freedom Award to Ann Symons, past president of ALA, for her long-term contributions to the cause of Intellectual Freedom. Minutes of the Library Staff Steering Committee Meeting
December 8, 1999
Present: A. Bendel, A. Conrad, J. Gammon, F. Huang, P. Lindell, L. Roberts, B. Trumpinski-Roberts, D. Walter, G. Witte, and E. Schroeder

I. Minutes of the November 10, 1999 meeting were revised and approved.
II. Reports
A. Admin. Council - see LON for detailed minutes
- Paula Kaufman encouraged units to have regular staff meetings
B. Faculty meeting - see LON for detailed minutes
- staff attended to hear the goals & objectives from the Strategic Plan
C. Library reconfig. - nothing new to report.
D. Strategic Planning Committee - the strategic plan goals and objectives to be done by Dec. 1999. The Committee is still revising the Plan. If you wish to receive a copy of the latest version, e-mail Gil Witte and he will send it (g-witte@uiuc.edu).
E. Awards sub-Committee - the first meeting is scheduled for Dec. 15.
III. Updates/Announcements
A. Gil Witte forwarded a report from Bart Clark indicating that the campus lighting committee walked through the Library parking lot to review the lighting situation.
IV. Discussions
A. LSSC elections - members whose term were to be extended should talk to their division for objections or to determine of someone wants to run for the office. Members should report back to G. Witte.
- Gil Witte and Eileen Schroeder will conduct the election for the two seats up.
V. New Business
Bob Burger was the guest
A. The Committee presented the history of LSSC meetings , whom we have met with, our concerns about receiving answers to questions submitted.
B. B. Burger said his job description is still evolving - he will consult with Paula Kaufman.
C. The Committee presented our concerns about training to B. Burger. Several ideas were discussed from mentoring a new staff to training a "core group" who would them train other staff.
