News & Announcements from University Administration:

The Provost is pleased to report that Dr. Ruth Watkins will become Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education effective August 16. Ruth joined the faculty of the Department of Speech and Hearing Science in 1993, and for the past three years she has served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Applied Life Studies. Ruth's research in child language is well known in her field, and she has been particularly interested in undergraduate education issues and innovations. She spearheaded creation of a Teaching Academy in her college, and she has been named to the "Incomplete List of Teachers Rated as Excellent by Their Students" every semester she has taught. Ruth has been involved in a range of undergraduate education issues, including campus-level assignments concerning the living/learning communities, general education, enrollment management, and undergraduate advising.

Ruth brings considerable knowledge and experience to her new assignment, along with a long-standing commitment to undergraduate education. The many colleagues across the campus who have worked with her on undergraduate education issues praise her sound academic values, good judgment, innovativeness, and skill in working with diverse constituencies. Under her leadership, the campus' stewardship of undergraduate education will be in good hands indeed.

News from the Field:

THIS WEEK AT THE ILLINOIS STATE LIBRARY

From October 22-25, the Illinois State Library will be participating in another "Illinois Library Host Program for International Librarians" through their partnership with the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at UIUC. The sixteen international librarians participating in this fall program are very diverse and come from many countries. While here, the international librarians are eager to learn about U.S. libraries and are very curious about many aspects of librarianship. The "Illinois Library Host Program" is a wonderful opportunity for the international librarians to truly explore Illinois libraries as it gives them the opportunity to observe first-hand the day-to-day operations of Illinois libraries. The program also enriches the staff and community of the host institution through the shared stories from the international librarians about libraries and customs in their countries. The host program starts with training that consists of an informational meeting and presentations from the international librarians at the Illinois State Library on the morning of October 22. After the host training, the international librarians will leave with their designated hosts for the remainder of the program. For more information about the program, or hosting an international librarian, contact Bonnie Matheis at bmatheis@ilsos.net or 217-558-2065.

The Illinois State Library has received 300 sets of fire safety videos from Allstate Insurance Company for distribution to Illinois libraries at no charge. The two videos are geared toward 5-8 years and 9-11 years of age. To obtain a set contact Bonnie Matheis at bmatheis@ilsos.net or 217-558-2065.

This week's selection from the Illinois Digital Archives is a biographical sketch of John Peter Altgeld, Twentieth Governor of Illinois.
