The goal is to provide perspective from all aspects of the library community. The editors encourage\u00a0article proposals from LIS students and those\u00a0new to the profession.<sup class=\"footnote\">13<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Examples of material published include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Original research with a discussion of its consequences and an argument for action.<\/li>\n<li>Articles arguing for a particular approach, strategy or development in librarianship, with practical examples of how it might be achieved.<\/li>\n<li>Transformative works with additional explanatory or interpretive content. For example, a transcription of an interview or panel discussion, with a substantial introduction explaining the importance of the subject to librarianship and a discussion of related literature.<sup class=\"footnote\">14<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Submission and review process:<\/strong>\u00a0Prospective authors are asked to submit\u00a0a 200-word abstract, a link or attachment to writing samples, and a current resume or CV using the email address listed on the submissions page.\u00a0Authors may\u00a0also submit a completed article, from 2000-5000 words, with citations as necessary.<sup class=\"footnote\">15<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>A staff member will respond to submissions within three weeks to indicate whether an article is appropriate to Lead Pipe publication goals in terms of content and style.<sup class=\"footnote\">16<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<em>Lead Pipe<\/em>\u00a0author instructions, \u201cThe author does the hard work of actually writing the article. Articles may have multiple authors, but in this case one author must be designated as the primary point of contact for the Editorial Board. Authors are also responsible for identifying an external reviewer. The external reviewer should have some professional connection to or knowledge of the article\u2019s topic, and is expected to provide expert review and constructive feedback. The external reviewer does not necessarily have to be librarian. Authors may work with someone they already know or reach out to the professional community. The Editorial Board is happy to offer guidance in identifying and contacting an appropriate reviewer if needed.\u201d<sup class=\"footnote\">17<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Per co-founder Brett Bonfield, \u201cOur goal is to make sure the article is factually accurate, well written, well edited, and interesting.\u201d<sup class=\"footnote\">18<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The process from selection to publication takes at least six weeks, with\u00a0<em>Lead Pipe<\/em>\u00a0editors requesting feedback and drafts from the author as necessary. This is a highly collaborative process where editors work closely with writers to produce the most fabulous writing possible for the site. Prospective authors should consult the\u00a0Guest Author Instructions, Framework for Guest Author Proposals, and Peer Review Guidelines before submitting.<sup class=\"footnote\">19<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Editorial tone:<\/strong>\u00a0Informal and engaging; informative yet relaxed. The articles are peer-reviewed, but speak to the entire community of people who work in and use the library. They are thoughtful, positive articles that pose challenging questions and educate readers on diverse aspects of the LIS world.<sup class=\"footnote\">20<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Style guide used:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<em>Lead Pipe<\/em>\u00a0includes an in-house\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org\/submission-guidelines\/style-guide\/\">style guide<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0its submission guidelines. Authors may use any citation style, as long as it is consistently applied within an article. The editors encourage use of the first-person for many articles, and request that authors avoid use of the passive voice.<sup class=\"footnote\">21<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion: Evaluation of publication\u2019s potential for LIS authors<\/h3>\n<p>This is an extremely LIS-student-friendly publication\u00a0open to a great variety of topics within the field.<sup class=\"footnote\">22<\/sup> The site has a registered ISSN number and although it has been awarded titles such as \u201cBest General Blog\u201d in 2012 from the Salem Press Library Blog Awards, the editors \u201cfeel that this rich peer review process sets us apart from scholarly blogs and puts us in the realm of \u201cjournal.\u201d<sup class=\"footnote\">23<\/sup>\u00a0Many writers have\u00a0<a title=\"In the Library With the Lead Pipe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org\/awards-good-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">referenced<\/a>\u00a0the site through other publications.<sup class=\"footnote\">24<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The editors \u201cencourage creative thinking, envelope-pushing, and constructive criticism,\u201d<sup class=\"footnote\">25<\/sup>\u00a0while \u201carticles indulging in non-constructive criticism will not be accepted.\u201d<sup class=\"footnote\">26<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Audience analysis<\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>About the publication\u2019s readers<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Publication circulation:<\/strong>\u00a0Not specified. According to a survey performed by Arthur Hendricks of 67 university library professionals, 3 of those 67 (4.5%) mentioned\u00a0<em>In the Library with the Lead Pipe<\/em>\u00a0as a blog that they regularly read.<sup class=\"footnote\">27<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Audience location and language or cultural considerations:<\/strong>\u00a0Currently all members of the editorial board work in the United States,<sup class=\"footnote\">28<\/sup>\u00a0and articles are written in American English.<sup class=\"footnote\">29<\/sup>\u00a0However, given that\u00a0<em>Lead Pipe<\/em>\u00a0is an internationally recognized, well-respected, yet informal journal that was previously a popular peer-reviewed\u00a0blog, a more global readership may be assumed.<\/p>\n<p>The publication style guide requests\u00a0that authors\u00a0\u201c. . . incorporate a global perspective in the context and arguments of articles (e.g., by considering what the broad international profession should do, not just what the American Library Association or U.S.-based librarians should do). It is acceptable for an article\u2019s focus to be on one geographic region, but this should be made clear in the article, and avoid phrases like \u201cacross the country\u201d without mentioning which country.\u201d<sup class=\"footnote\">30<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reader characteristics:<\/strong>\u00a0Editors take pride in having diverse skills and interests, and bring all of that knowledge to the website, making it an interesting site to read even by those outside the profession.\u00a0<em>Lead Pipe<\/em>\u00a0is directed towards people involved in libraries in any capacity, from librarians to support staff and community members.<sup class=\"footnote\">31<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Knowledge of LIS subject matter:<\/strong>\u00a0Strong.<sup class=\"footnote\">32<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion: Analysis of reader characteristics and their potential impact on authors<\/h3>\n<p>The journal is one of the longer standing open source, peer-edited and -reviewed LIS sites, dating back to 2008. It is read and referenced by librarians internationally, and provides good information and topics of conversation for librarians and those interested in the LIS community. It is an informally written site but still presents scholarly articles along with editorials and opinion pieces, and would be a good platform\u00a0for LIS students who wish to network and share ideas and concerns through writing articles for a community of peers.<\/p>\n<p>Per editor Brett Bonfield: \u201cWe think of ourselves as a journal and we publish \u201carticles,\u201d not posts, and those articles are indexed by EBSCO for its library database products. We\u2019re not aggressive about it or anything\u2013we were delighted by the Salem Press blog award, for instance\u2013but it\u2019s a distinction that has\u00a0meaning for us.
