Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains a few letters of James H. and Charles P. Leverich, New York merchants, engaged in the Southern trade. The letters concern business matters such as the charter of ships to transport goods, the sale of property and goods in the South, and bills of exchange. The Leverich firm was a factor of Dr. Stephen Duncan, perhaps the wealthiest planter in the antebellum South.

Wilbur Duncan of Decatur, Ill. donated the collection to the Library. Other, larger Leverich collections are at the New-York Historical Society, the University of Texas at Austin, and Rice University.
