Scope and Contents of the Materials

Peace Action, or SANE/Freeze, is a grassroots peace organization that was formed through the merger of The Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy and the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign (also known as "The Freeze"). The organization's founding mission is to stop violence and war throughout the world, to stop weapons sales to countries with human rights violations, to prevent the deployment of nuclear weapons in space, and to promote a new U.S. foreign policy based on human rights, democracy, and peaceful resolution of international conflicts.

This collection consists of administrative papers, minutes of meetings, and newsletters of the Peace Action group of Champaign-Urbana, Ill. The collection includes materials from several groups that were precursors to Peace Action, among them the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Nuclear War, the Illinois Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign, and the C-U Nuclear Freeze. The materials were in part deposited in the Library by Clark E. Cunningham, of Champaign, Ill.
